Took delivery today (for her) Z4 Roadster 2.5i 57 plate with 20K on clock and automatic.
I will be buying a couple of additional keys. When I get from the dealer, will I have to have them to programme to match the ones I have, or can this be a diy task?

You will have to have them programmed at the dealers, if you ask them they will give you a print out of all the available options that are programmable to the key, and there are quiet a few option available.

I just wondered why you need to purchase additional keys? when you said to match the ones you have!

Yes, 3 keys. Now, 1 to be kept in office and one in holiday home. Yes I know but........ Just in case.

The keys arent cheap, and if you do lose/damage one, they are easily obtained from the dealer, but you will require I think your VO5 document when you order them

2 remote control keys and 1 plastic key are standard (3 in total). Dealer should give you 3 keys.

VO5 ? isnt that something women put on their hair :poke: ?!

V5 might get you further.....

Remember these keys are charged from insertion and use while in the ignition, so a key stored in a holiday home has a fair chance of not working is simply left unused and picked up after several months...

£100 per key plus £40 to code is the last figure I saw and there are a total of only 5 spares from date of sale of car. After that you need a complete change of locks.

I gave my spare key to my mechanic yesterday, first time it's been used in over 2 years of me having the car and it worked no problem. Lucky!

I guess it partly depends on luck, age, condition of battery and what the first use of it was. If put in the ignition to drive off I doubt a problem. If to remote open then perhaps more an issue.

Here's the rechargeable battery inside:

If for emergencies though you could obviously use the key in the door.

Not sure if that would trigger the alarm but eventually you'd get it going.

No it wouldn't trigger the alarm, it's fine to use the key in the door and the ignition, it's why it has keyholes ;)

I have the 3 keys supplied with the car. Just want extras.

Keys are approximately £100 each from the dealer. You need to produce photo ID and vehicle registration document to order and collect (well that's what mine required). I programmed the key to the car myself - dealer gave me a TIS printout - takes a few minutes. As CJ states there is a limit on how many keys can be programmed to the Zed. I have 3 plus the plastic one, lost one and then found it about a year later and worked no problem.

Lots of older BMWs used to be: if it's locked with the remote, it needs to be unlocked with it too. If it's locked with the key it's fine.
It's kinda the same as the key locking not applying the perimeter sensor, using the remote is like a higher level of lock. You get around this by putting the key in the ignition - which then senses the chip in the key and deactivates the alarm.

Im gonna try mine now.. expect the kill will just unlock it these days.

"I programmed the key to the car myself - dealer gave me a TIS printout - takes a few minutes."

So you can programme yourself. Can you tell us all how?

OK, fine. So if you have your full set of keys and purchase an additional key, can that key be programmed by you, not for things like seats, but just to open, close and alarm (obviously drive)
