Thought I would add to http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=47615 as I just had same problem - thanks for the info. Battery was dead (think I had left interior light on) - neither key would open door - nor would the little plastic emergency key. Opened boot, charged up battery and keys worked again.
Very odd indeed. I didn't think both keys could have gone at same time and I didn't think that should affect the ability to open door by sticking key in it. What is the emergency key for if it doesn't work in this scenario. In the past when battery has run down, I have been able to open the door with the key so not sure what was different this time.
