Keys locked in car - new 1 Series

Very odd occurrence today.
Wifey is out doing some dog trailing thing in the 1 Series.
She leaves the car unlocked while she's trailing as other people stay with it.
Today she left the keys in the boot and shut it down. When she came back to the car it was locked.
I didn't think that could happen with the keys in the car?
They were laying right at the rear lip of the boot.

Luckily, although I'm sitting 30 miles away, I have the BMW app on my phone and was able to unlock the car for her using that. What a great invention.

I am concerned though that she managed to get into this predicament. Anyone got any ideas? Is it a fault?
I am wondering whether, if the keys are taken out of the car but then put back in, the car doesn't realise they're back inside?

However, the other thing that's baffling me is: how did it even lock? Another car nearby on the same frequency/code??

A lot of cars have an option in the OBC to lock doors after a certain time if none have been opened. Maybe the boot is not included as a door.

That's kind of where I'm thinking too.
She was a tad flustered so hard to work out the exact issue over the phone, but I wonder if she came back to a locked car and only used the unlock boot button so the rest of the car stayed locked.
Think I'll have a play later and see if I can replicate it.

I may also remove the door auto locking function from her key profile, just in case.....................she'll never know

Or she could just be getting you know, a bit old and demented?

My mistake was opening the car using the app on the phone.
At some point she'll start to wonder if I locked it in the first place!!

Well did you :poke: :poke:

No doubt at some point I will just give up and say I did, for a quiet life

Tell her you were worried a wild haggis might’ve got into the boot :poke:

On the wild assumption that anyone may be in the least bit interested (maybe G29 owners as their cars seem to have a lot of the same features?), I think I've found the cause of the issue.
If you press the lock button (accidentally or otherwise - no recriminations allowed apparently  ) then the closed doors will all lock and any that are open will lock as soon as you shut them.
So it appears that somehow (let's blame cold hands, or gloves or maybe the dog :D ) the lock button was pressed, then the keys laid in the boot and the tailgate shut.
At least having the app on the phone saved me a long journey.

I have an old 1 series (2016) and I don't think it does that. I am pretty sure that I opened just the boot once (rest of the car locked) then accidentally left the key in the boot when I closed it and the boot did not lock (it normally does so automatically if you just open the boot). However, I realised immediately and was relieved it didn't lock. You could do some tests at home when you have both keys handy but you'll probably need to keep the spare out of range of the car.

Unless you have comfort access then this is the answer and easy to do.

I have comfort access :)

Then should be impossible as keys are near car so wont lock. Luckily on my F11 I have the app so can unlock if I did ever do the stupid act.

Handy, though knowing the extent hackers can infiltrate systems am rather wary will wake up one day where my Merc will no longer be there

I opened the hatchback on our Merc GLC i then threw the keys and phone on the back, then absent mindlessly pressed the button to shut the door, when it shut the car was locked, no way of getting in so my son in law had to come the 30miles with the spare key. I was not popular
