Or leave them in the microwave (it's a Faraday cage) - best shield you can get apparently

I would if I had a microwave and if I did unsure I could carry that around with me

I too was going to buy a special wallet to keep mine in but after doing some online research about it apparently just keeping them in a tin with a tight fitting lid is just as effective  https://makezine.com/2015/08/14/block-car-door-relay-hack-faraday-cage/

I guess you could also wrap the keyfob in tin foil, I'v ordered 2 faraday pouchs off Amazon, they're ony 6 quid each a bit more portable.

One of my customers M5 went the same way last week. Insurance have paid out.

I assume they need to keep the car running, once they have it away from the keys.

Have you a link please Tim?

Just enter Defender Signal Blocker into Amazon. I paid £5.49 for the grey pouch.

Sorry I put a link in but it keeps showing my order postcode

For the sake of a few quid has to be worth it after seeing that video and how easy it is to get into the car.

I guess they keep the car running long enough to get it to a workshop to be dismantled for parts.

Wire in a hidden kill switch, or use a steering lock. Yes, both can be found and/or circumvented eventually, but unless the thieves NEED to steal your car, you would hope they would move on to a softer target? Just a shame that these vehicles have state of the art anti-theft security built in, but it can be so easily circumvented.
Or just go back to the 'old days' of having to press a button on the keyfob to unlock the vehicle...

the problem with blocking it.. is what if they really want your car? they'll come hammers blazing in your house.

I'd rather not have that.

The main reason for not ordering it with any of my cars. Too easy to bypass and it seems that most thefts are cars that have that option. I don't see the benefit, my son's 140 has it and he still has to put the key somewhere (usually in the centre cup holder or so), so what is the benefit really.

The benefit is that the fob stays in your pocket (or for ladies in their handbag) so there's no need to fish it out and press a button to enter the car - just walk up, pull on the door handle, get in, press the start button and drive off. We have this on our Z4 and another car and it's particularly appreciated by the Mrs.

I was sat in the waiting room at hospital this week and they had a show on TV talking about this. On the show they mentioned keeping your keys in the fridge as a preventative method.

I'd be a little concerned about condensation on the electronics when taking it out of the fridge into a warm room, although it should really be sealed well enough for this not to be a problem.

Thinking about this a bit more, surely the thieves would only be able to link to your key fob within it's normal effective range? e.g. they would need to be within a couple of metres of the key fob to pick up enough signal to amplify it back to the car. The range of the key fob is very small (for the keyless entry function, not for when you press a button on it, which is significantly further), so as long as your key fob is out of range of the exterior of your building, you should be fine?
Dropping the key fob in a metal box, even without a lid, would probably cut this range down even further - it wouldn't need to be a perfect faraday cage to do the job well enough.
Just my thoughts, and without one of these signal amplifiers, impossible to test.

Edit: Just to add to the above - you can see the thief holding the transceiver as close as possible to the building, particularly the windows (path of greatest reception/least interference) and moving it all around trying to get a signal. This would indicate to me that the range is very short.

There's alot of chat of Autowatch Ghost on babybmw but my view is take out GAP insurance and hope if your car is nicked it's not recovered. I keep the cars key fobs in shielded pouches now and don't worry about it.

Lol - My neighbour is now totally paranoid about his SQ7, so much so that he's now backing it up under the house every night with 2 cars in front, first time in 10 years he's put anything up the drive.
