Keyless Remote Not Working [SOLVED]

Hi All,
I recently purchased an 07 Z4 3.0si and I am loving the car so far. The car has been used a lot, but it is nothing some TLC can't fix.

The car only has one key, and ever since I got the car the remote on the key did not work, for the most part it is not a huge issue, but it is something that I want to get fixed. I open the trunk and get inside the car by manually using the key.

I have tried initializing, doesn't work. I have tried it using position 1 & 2, with doors locked and unlocked.
I opened up the key itself to replace the battery, but using a multimeter i saw that the battery terminals had 3V across so there was no need to change a working battery.

The inside door lock does work.
At night time the red LED on the rearview mirror blinks, letting us know that the alarm is set.

After work I am planning on checking the fuses.

If anyone has had a similar problem and found a solution let me know! I am hoping to see different things that I could troubleshoot. The GM5 module is one such thing that came up in searches.

Quick update: It seems the key is the problem, since it is not outputting a signal. I got this tested at an AutoZone near my place. Does anyone know the next step?

I'd prefer not spending $205 on a new key.

Is the key itself the problem? Or is the battery inside the key flat? Did they confirm that for you or did they just stop at "it's not outputting a signal"?

I tested it out and the key was not outputting a signal, one of the workers used their keys and the device they used to test key remotes showed that it was working. The battery has a 3v drop across the terminals, so Im guessing its an issue with the transmitter of the key. I ordered a blank key from amazon that I should be able to program. If all goes well I plan on cutting that key and swapping the transponder.

Hi All!

Quick update. My plan worked and I finally got a working remote for my Z4!!

I hope this thread can help someone someday. A quick note is that the method I used was:

Unlock all the doors, windows were up and top was up.
Place key into ignition
Turn to position 1 and back five times.
Remove key.
On the new key press and hold the unlock button, press the lock button 3 times, release the unlock button.
Place old key into ignition and turn to position 1.

If you're in my position, you have a key the can start the car, but the remote on it doesnt work and you have a key that can not start the car, but the remote works. The key that can start the car turns the ignition to position 1, the key with the working remote does the other stuff. In most programming methods the door is supposed to be locked. For the Z4 in my case they were both unlocked, it doesnt hurt to try both.

It is also worth noting that the transponder for our diamond keys is soldered into the PCB, so you will most likely end up carrying two keys unless you feel confident enough to remove the transponder from the old key and transfer it to the new one.
