Are you talking about keyless entry as in no need to do anything?, just walk up to the car and it opens (sensing the key/card in your pocket) -which isn't an option on the Z4 afaik
Or is it remote keys, as in the standard key fob you get with Z4's that have bottons to open/lock the doors?

hi , i ment that you walk to the car and dont have to do anything it sensing zv key ,,in the us i think they have that option .. :?

Nope, not an option here in the US. You have to push the button on the key to open the door. The particular option you're talking about IS available, but only on other models (I believe just the ones with push button start).

i think i'd be a bit reluctant to want to have this neat feature. as much as it is convienent and cool... i'd be too afraid of someone else (kids, siblings, thief) getting ahold of my key and simply walking up to my car and driving away.

maybe its just paranoia... but.. it's a concern of mine

What am I missing? Why is it any greater security risk (or at least create fear) having a proximity key stolen, than 1 that you can blip to open the car from say 20 feet away?

i guess i'd just rather be the one pulling the trigger, per se. instead of having a key automatically unlock the car within a [lets say] 20 foot distance.

OK - I guess if I were to critique then my understanding is that you could steal the traditional key, blip it in a car park and see which one of several hundred in range it was and steal it. The keyless will only operate from a few feet off and is silent and invisible (depending on how programmed).

I'd take the proximity anyday, knowing that even if it failed to lock that that is less likely than me failing to lock it and it's got an immobiliser anyway. Add to that it's one less thing to do as I approach the car.

My guess is in 20 years no more keys and just biometrics on approach or entry.

my Alfa used to lock itself after a minute if you forgot - about the only electrical thing that did work mind you...

on the new 3 series is it a cost option then? not sure it would bother me that much to pay the extra - maybe that is just me!

cj10jeeper,

hey that's cool. if they can get it right, safe and secure.. then i definitely would love to have that. and i guess you're right... it'd be impossible to find your car if you were to have your key picked up from the floor (say it fell off). i just didnt think about that aspect.

gannet - an option of the Zed is to have the car (or key - can't remember which) programmed to auto lock after a short time. Sounds the same as the Alfa

I've always worried about this one though as I'm sure I'd leave keys on the drivers seat while working ont he car and find myself locked out.

Well the thing is.. the car won't open within 20 feet... you actually have to touch the door handle to open the car. This is the way our 3 series set.
And if you left the key fob in the car it won't close.

I have had this programmed, doesn't work in quite the same way though... It only relocks if you unlock the car and then don't open any doors.

That would make more sense. :)
