Key programming

Hi all,

I really like the look of the newer BMW car keys, and have spotted a few on e-bay for reasonable money (link below - although this one seems quite pricey!). Assume it fairly easy to get a new blade cut and fitted. But how easy is it to get a key reprogammed for remote central locking?

I spotted the below instrustructions, but it all seems too easy?!

Has anyone done this mod?

Method 1:

1. Working from within the vehicle and with the doors shut

2. Turn ignition to position 1 and back to off within 5 seconds.

3. Remove the key from ignition and press and hold the unlock button for 15 seconds during this time press the key lock button 3 times within 5 seconds.

4. Release both buttons.

5. Doors will lock and unlock to show correct programming has occurred.

Any help much appreciated.

The new key is nice......well in the pic, I would consider it.....I have to agree with DHK though, I doubt it would be chargeable like the original is.

Thats a good point, but could put up with changing battery's now and again.

More worried about if it would actually be easily programmable. From what I have found on the internet, it sounds like its do-able yourself...

But sounds far too good to be true!

If I can get a key off e-bay cheap, will give it a punt anyway. If it doesnt work out can always put it back on e-bay.

I've wondered about this for quite some time. Let us know how it turns out and I'll be on board.

No, no, no - slow down guys.

You can very easily programme any key to match the alarm system simply by doing the old in and out the ignition with a known good key. That will get the alarm on and off, doors open, etc.

Cutting a new blade - possibl,e but I've never seen one that can do it in all my time.

Next step is the party stopper - you can't start the engine with your newly programmed key. The transponder is matched to the car and cannot be reprogrammed or changed from key to key, car to car. If you want a new one it comes from BMW's central store. Lose 5 ( I think that's the number) and that's it game over. Replace half the cars electronics, locks, keys, etc.

I've tried, wasted effort and in the end rebuilt the electronics in my own key to make it work again.

If you're curious this is what's inside your key. You might just be able to retrofit that inside the new case if you could activate the 3 microswitches visible in the first image. How the new style charges I have no idea.
