Key Programming

Hi guys,
my mate has a 57 2.0l Z4 and he tried to use the spare key but wouldn't work. He's been told it needs to be programmed? ignition lights come on but engine won't turn over. Any ideas?

They run out of battery after a while, but seeing as he can get into the car - I imagine that's not the problem.

Has the car been re-programmed with the normal key without the other present? I've got 3 keys, 2 work and 1 wasn't coded at the same time so is now dead.

Few questions:

Has the spare key ever been used to completely open the doors using remote and start the car?

Did you on this ocassion manage to open the door using the remote on the spare or simply put it in the ignition of an already open car?

How long since this key was last used?

Reason I ask is that a key has 2 levels of security. The first allows the remote to open the door, disable the alarm, etc. Using the guides above this is an easy reprogramme.

The second is a transponder that links to the engine and cannot be programmed. These can only come with new keys supplied by the dealer. People buy blanks off ebay and cut them but they can never start the car

Let's hope it's the former and you'll be away real quick
