Key Memory Advice needed

Hi new member, been reading for a couple of weeks prior to purchasing my 04, 3.0i Z4 Roadster....3 days in and I love the car to pieces already!!!!

Question for anyone who knows, I cant seem to make the roof come down and windows down (the manual refers to it as convienience opening i think) from my key fob. I have held down the Arrow button on the fob for ages and nothing happens....I live in UK so not a massive issue due to us getting 5 days a year of sun but I still wanna be able to do it!

Is this an optional extra that I dont perhaps have on my car or is this an instance of the previous owner changing the memory settings? This is my first BMW so I am a total newbie, do I need to go to a dealer to reset the memory on my key? Do they charge a lot for this service? Can I change it myself?

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Hi and Welcome

I dont think it is a standard option on a 04 Z4, but I can be proved wrong  any key memory setting is a trip to the dealer, or a very good independant

From memory it's a model year thing. To be honest even if it works its a PITA, as you will never hold the button down long enough.

Better to get a Reinhold remote roof module for around £70, just press the open button three times, and the close button the same to close.

Mattt,

The build date of your car can be found on the drivers side when you open the door, there should be 2 plates and right at the top of one it will give you the build date. Open the door and where the latch hoop is on the car is where to look.

might be stating the obvious here.. but you don't just hold it down..

just press it once (car unlocks).. then immediately press again and hold.. it is awkward but ive mastered it and mines down by the time i touch the door handle every time :)

On my 2003 Z4 to put top down I only put key in door lock and turn left (unlock) and hold a little while. To put top up turn right (lock). Buttons have nothing to do with it.

Yes, pre 04/04 build can do this - but I find it just as quick to jump in and press the button - then you can have the engine running at the same time.

If you do a search this subject has been covereed a few times.

A dealer cannot programme it in the UK, as far as I'm aware, but it has been reported that at least one specialist has cracked doing it on any model year.

IMHO and that of many others the Reinhold module is the way to go. 3 blips and the roof folds down and 3 more and back up it comes. Can be all set before you even walk to the car or closed in style (incl the windows as you walk away).

Couple if with the one touch module and then oyu don't have to hold the up or down button on the console, which is a pain while doing a quick roof up or down when stopped at lights, etc.

Appreciate the responses, thanks for taking the time as its useful info to a total novice like myself. I'll try the other options tomorrow, i.e. pressing then pressing and holding again.........if it stops raining lol!

Might be worth me starting another thread but I'm in need of some floormats to protect my carpet and I also fancy some clear side indicators....I've googled for these and the floormats can be found in the UK, although I would love a reccomendation from someone on a nice fitted set. The clear indicators I can only seem to find on US based places, anyone know where to pick up these in the UK?

No, havent tried the dealer for the clear indicators covers, guess I assumed that they would be much more expensive than some online shop or ebay source.

Do a search on the board as this has been covered before and there are several suppliers of the lenses. I think that BMW is about the same price IIRC. You might want to consider the clear rear third brake light at the same time.

Car mats - I use Ebay as in the instance of the Zed I picked up a new genuine set for £1 or £2 !!! plus P&P. On my other cars I've had good experience of made to order off Ebay as you can customise to what you want ( piping, logo's, etc.) They are also a disposable item so not too critical if you make a mistake.

In response to your remote roof query, mine is a 2003 53 plate 3.0 roadster and i had mine programmed to operate via the key (to go up and down, inc windows) by Autologic, who are a very good independent dealer based in Hessle, East Yorkshire. He also turned on many other features for me as well. Its well worth a trip, it was set up by the guys who worked for the local BMW dealership so they know their stuff, friendly and reasonable on prices, they even did some stuff for free on my E46 Coupe.

On the third rear brake light the clear one is actually cheaper than the red one from the dealer - go figure :o
