Key battery

The battery in one of my keys has a very short range (6ft) and the other will only open at 6in and then have no power to re-lock.

Can we change the battery ourselves, is it a watch battery ? How do you get "at it" ?
 
I'm not aware you do 'get at them' - the keys recharge while they are in the ignition, so under-use is bad news and is possibly your problem, depending on age of the vehicle :thumbsup: .
 
Yep, had mine in a back pocket the other week, must have been sitting on the button because when I went back to the car it didn't work at all. Used it for a run and was back in operation again.

I hadn't used my spare key in 4 years when I tried it the other month, worked perfectly. But as lacroupade, says, better to use it as I don't think a new battery is an option. If the range doesn't improve it's probably just the key, keep that as the spare.
 
As above without comfort access :thumbsup:

If you have comfort access, putting it in the dash does not recharge it, it has a battery that needs replacing.

Comfort access = sounds like an option for incontinent pensioners LOL :rofl:

But I thought CA was a separate plip module, not a key?
 
Surely the battery must be changeable, even rechargable batteries eventually give up ghost, I try to use my spare key on a regular basis just to recharge it
 
The key is a sealed component so can only be sawn open.

Once open yes you could replace the battery, but it's soldered in

is there a battery life span? i would guess at 10 years tops for a rechargeable battery
 
I guess so, but mine is a 2003 on original keys and batteries. Still opens the doors at 50m to 100m depending on exact location.

I suspect most problems are related to sensors and not the keys battery.
 
I've never been able to lock or unlock from that distance.

Funny thing is, there are certain places that cause major problems with the remote, there must be interference as it takes 3 or 4 clicks right at the window to lock the car. elsewhere it is just as normal.
 
Hold the key against the side of your head when pressing the button, it allows you to open and close from much further away.

Before you all laugh, go and try it. God knows what it does to your brain though!!!

Yep I do this all the time. Key only works from less than 5m otherwise.
 
Yep, the mass and large vacuum or empty space near the signal increases the capacitance and triples the range. My m3 keys were really bad but the girl at the BMW dealers in Spokane zapped my car from at least 75 feet away. She held the keys low and in front of her as she walked.........
