Key battery

Just a quickie guys please,

my key doesn't do anything remote. Read here that the battery dies and is rechargeable. Is it a special battery then or does an ordinary battery one work? Calling in to see Mike at ZedShed and hope he will fix anyhow.

Had this on a R52. Key was dead so charged it one day on a toothbrush, and another on a phone wireless charging pad for a second day (for good measure). Then you'll need to sync the key with the car. Various different methods, and think they differ slightly if you have more than one key. Have a google or look on YouTube. I did the following:

1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly
2. Remove key
3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. Car will cycle the cetral locking system (so will lock then unlock in quick succession).
5. Done. Test to ensure it works.

Thanks guys, the mechanic I have has already replaced the battery. Hence my question is it a special one? If it is maybe he got the right one but thought I would ask this question here. If it's a special and he replaced it with an ordinary one I hope he didn't throw it away.
 
Yes its a rechargeable one. Most battery's aren't... so he may just have replaced it with a standard battery and this won't charge via the ignition. So will die again eventually. Best checking with him. You can get replacement rechargeable ones, so if yours was knackered you can still get a new one (doesn't matter if he did throw it away).

I'll also add that it's really uncommon for the battery to die. The only way you can change it is to do a "cut and shut" which is messy as you have to cut the key in half? I'm suspect he just re-coded it but told you he replaced the battery?
 
I thought the battery had gone on mine, turned out to be a sync issue. Just needed to re learn it to the car and all was good again.
 
If he really has replaced the battery it will be the right one. I don’t think non-rechargeable are available in that package. It’s a pcb solder in type.

But yes, the key has to be cut open and glued back together so it should be pretty obvious.

My key wouldn’t work, I tried the above and nothing. I read further and found that after doing the above you must turn on the ignition for less than four seconds to finalise the pairing. Mine now works :thumbsup:

Always great doing a "free" fix. Certainly cheaper than buying a new key!!
