Hello

Does anyone know how to replace the battery in the key I have opened the key but the battery appears to be attached permanently to a silver spiral piece .
Any ideas ?

Thanks

I forced a sharp knife underneath it and prized it off

Bends the silver hoop a bit but you can bend it back into shape easily enough.

thanks I have got it out using that method , if I get a replacement battery and fit it in does the key need reprogramming ?

I've just done this and my key needed to be re-programmed with the car, although my lock button is no longer working. Unlock and boot release are working fine though.

It's my understanding that the key recharges itself while its in the ignition. The battery should not have to be replaced.

this is true the BMW key has a rechargeable battery fitted. if you have a spare key its best to use it now and again just to keep charge in it.

Perfectly true and should be the last port of call, but regardless of this some of the rechargeable batteries do die and have needed to be replaced. Some of them are well over a decade old now.

my original key is dead as a dodo. been using the spare ever since. how does the key come apart and what sort of battery do I need?

You'd have to cut or saw the key apart along the crease line then reassemble glue/seal. Alternative is to buy a new case from Ebay

Can't recall the battery number, but search the forum as it's listed.
