Yeah that's true rob. It's actually the anode which is sacrificial. I've put them on subsea manifolds at well-heads and it works due to corrosion being an electrochemical process. The corrosion occurs more at the anode due to it being a more corrosion-attractive metal. But i doubtwhether it would work on cars as you need a medium for it to work, like salty sea etc. I dunno, maybe it could work locally....

Why do some Zeds rust and others don't - is it simply that some have been exposed to the elements or have some Zeds suffered from faulty manufacturing at the bodywork stage?

I've seen shocking corrosion on vehicles that have been on the coast for years, I think the air carries more salt?
It could also be a badly applied anti corrosion stage before the panels are painted :o

I wonder if the Made in GERMANY cars will be more corrosion resistant than the made in USA vehicles?
 
That looks to be seam sealant failure, all manufacturers have random issues with this, the only real cure is to replace the panels unfortunately - It has nothing to do with the plant it's made in , more to do with the robot applying the goop, any small gaps or inclusions and the moisture is in (And trapped). The subframes and crash structures only have a thin coat of semi gloss paint (No primer, No E Coat) so no great surprise there, but they are heavy gauge steel.
 
From my own experience having a garage can be a bad thing. If you put a wet car in a garage it will take longer to dry. My own garage is not exactly air tight and when I was working underneath the Z4 the entire underside was covered in condensation even although the car had been in the garage for a week. If the car was my car I would get a second hand door and boot lid and replace them both with rust free panels rather than trying to repair them.

All E85/6 are made in the USA

I realise that but I wonder if the E89 will be more corrosion resistant as they are produced in Germany and more suitable protection for the climate / conditions?

All E85/6 are made in the USA

I realise that but I wonder if the E89 will be more corrosion resistant as they are produced in Germany and more suitable protection for the climate / conditions?

Don't want to worry you Ron, but having spent a little time lately under an E89, there is a lot less anti stone chip protection than there is on the E85's

I have been running older cars for years and have come across a good deal of rust in my time. If the rust is primarily surface or hasnt eaten into the metal too much I would always recommend spraying everything with 'white grease' . It is designed not to wash off and being a spray gets into all those parts and is fairly cheap to buy. The MOT inspector always tells me it is the right thing to do and he has never issued me with a failure for those common rust areas. I spray all the brake pipes etc whenever carrying out an inspection prior to the MOT.
 
My late father in law was old school - he used to mix his old sump oil with paraffin then brush it into every nook and cranny under the car - yes it was smelly and dirty but when it was car selling time he cleaned it off to leave it looking as new!
