Keeping roof down and service question.

Got a new 2.0 Sport 3 weeks ago and have a couple of questions. Since purchase anytime I have been out in the dry I have had roof down. Car is garaged all the time so is it okay to keep it down when put away in garage, rather than putting it up and down every time when not using car. Second question is the car set up for 2 year service intervals/18000 Miles. My car was December build and service shows November 2021/18000 miles. I have a 1 Series and I know it is 2 years/18000 Miles. My car was not pre registered and I am the first owner. Any help and advice appreciated before I ask dealer. Thank you.

If it was me I’d put the roof up every couple of weeks overnight to stretch it out Ricky, perhaps not essential by any means but it’s so easy to do why not..? Might just avoid folding marks from it being down so long. Only imo but that’s what I’d be doing.

Enjoy the forum, feel more than free to post pics of your car..... :poke:

I would be leaving it down only 2 to 3 days and my intention would then be to put it up like you say. We normally don’t get any more than 3 dry days together :D . Thanks for your reply.

The roof goes up on my car every time I'm done with it. I could easily leave it outside and a sudden rain shower occurs!

It's garaged each night, putting the roof up restricts all sorts of pests making nests in there such as spiders, mice etc. Not foolproof, but it helps.

My G29 was also set for 18000 miles / 2 years service interval, if that answers your question.

Enjoy your new car as much as I have and welcome to the forum

Found your mojo with that car aintcha Doc.....don’t think it'll be long before I’m in the club....  :driving:

I find keeping the roof up helps keep the dust and pollen out of the cockpit. Much easier to press the button than to keep wiping and cleaning the inside. Mine is garaged as well and I keep the roof up all the time it’s parked up.

Hope you enjoy the car. I have not facts but if it were me i would put the roof up mostly even in the garage, as others have said keeps the dust and other creepy crawly things out of the car and probably best to keep it rigid.

Thanks for the replies. When it is in garage I put a massive sheet that covers from the windscreen to the boot lid to put a to stop dust etc.

its early days but if anything like the E85 motors its best to keep them (and all other parts) moving. As said above, it will prevent folds and keep the interior clean.
"A rolling stone gathers no moss" as they say.

On a separate issue, I know my insurance poliicy excludes theft whilst the roof is down, so maybe worth checking your policy in case its stolen from the garage overnight (with the roof down)

Unless I'm missing something here what possible advantage can there be to leaving your roof down overnight?

It takes seconds to raise\lower automatically unlike an old MX5 I had some years back which was manual.

Isn't it just easier to press the button and put the roof up Ricky? :)

Sounds like you’ve made yourself a roof there... :poke: ;)
Interested into the benefit of not putting the roof up. I’d imagine creases etc would be worse / more noticeable is the roof is folded down constantly

I’m at a bit of a loss with this. A sheet to cover where the roof would be? Why? Surely just raise the roof back up. I think you’ll get fold lines and creases if its just down constantly. These items are tested and are very durable, so its not going to wear out if you’re putting it up and down as and when required. As mentioned, it also keeps parts moving and working as they should.

If I was going to take the car out the next day I thought there wouldn’t be much sense in putting it up to put it down the following day. Wish I hadn’t asked now. :D :D :D :D :D

It's not going to be a problem in the short term but please have a look at old Golfs/Astras/etc which have had their hoods down for protracted periods and you will see splits where the material has creased over time. Conversely I have a 1986 Cabriolet on its original roof (car bought in 1989) which is still perfect because it is always kept roof up unless there is an opportunity to have the roof open (hols/occasional UK days).
