keep losing screenwash.

ok so the previous owner didn't bother telling me about the screenwash leak, but in all fairness i should've checked everything.

i took the screenwash bottle out and it seems like the small black filter/pump thing connected to the side leaks. is this a common problem?

i have headlight washers in the front bumpers also and i had my headlights on and pulled the stalk multiple times but they never sprayed.

any ideas? it doesn't bother me too much as i prefer to clean the windscreen/lights with a cloth, but if it's an MOT fail then i'll have to fix them.

I had a problem on an Audi that had a leaking headlamp washer. They gave me an advisory for the MOT... and that had xenons on it too. As far as I understand it, operative headlamp washers are only required if you have xenons... but someone please correct me if I'm wrong :)
 
If you have Xenon lights then the failure of the headlight washers is an MOT failure. :(

Washer bottle leak at the pump joint seems to be a reasonably common problem not just on the Zed but other models using the same components. :?

Headlight washers do not operate every time but approximately 5 'washes' of the windscreen - to conserve washer fluid.

The headlight washer operates from a separate pump so this could be a problem.

Another common leak point on the Z4 is the washer jet hose for the headlights. In winter if they freeze they can pop off from the jet and also like mine split.

A complete hose assembly from BMW from the washer bottle to both headlamp washer jets is just over £20, so not expensive but does require the bumper to be taken off to replace.
 
thanks for the replies :thumbsup: i only have halogen's.

i have heard of the hoses coming off also. i guess the only way to find out if to remove the bumper. yet another job to ad to the never ending list :lol:
 
To check the hoses you dont need to take the bumper off.Inside the wheel arch under the access panel for the headlamps is a smaller panel that gives access to the hoses and foglights.Access is easier if you turn the wheel to one side.I have had the same issues but need a new headlamp washer......
 
On turning the wheels to get access, do the counterintuitive thing and point the wheel OUT on the side your going into. More room :thumbsup:
 
I'd start looking at cleaning and replacing parts. Take the pump off the bottle, clean up the seal and the pump inner (they can gunk up), then put back together, adding a little Vaseline around the seal to aid it doing its job. As for the pipe work, why anyone would replace the standard rubber pipes with oem stuff is beyond me, black silicone hose would be better as it is better at heat resistance and won't crack in the cold.
 
Quite often screenwash in conjunction with hard water will leave a residue like limescale where it's been leaking. It might help pinpoint the leak.
