K1200S

Having had a break with bikes for a couple of years, I'm starting to get the itch again. My last one was a VFR800 but I've always fancied a K1200S. I rode a K1200R a couple of years ago and the torque together with ESA made for a great ride so spec wise ESA is on my list of must haves. I've never owned a BMW bike before but I expect they've been tweaked over the years so I'm looking for advice on spec, problems to watch for and any general advice on buying.

Half Colin,

The BMW K1200 S is a good bike. I test rode one when they first came out and was impressed with the power and handling. The only real issues were snatchy fuelling at low revs ( I think all the bikes will now of had a ECU update to sort the problem.) the other issue is vibrations from the engine on a closed throttle. This is because the mixture is leaned off to help emissions and fuel consumption. I agree ESA and heated grips are "must have's". I think it might be slightly lighter than your VFR and was very stable in the corners. VFRs are great bikes though, but the BMW is very powerful and made my VFR VTEC feel like it was running on three cylinders when I got back on it!

I now have a BMW R1200S and love it. Mine is a Boxer twin and not as powerful or smooth as the K engines. BMW make some great bikes but make sure you get a long test ride as they can take time to get accustomed to.

Good luck,

Warren

Thanks Warren - I know what you mean about getting back on the VFR - having to drop a couple of gears to make progress where the BMW just stays in 6th accelerates like a train. Of all the bikes I've had though I always seem end up back on a VFR (had a 750 and 800) so it's tempting to pick another. Like this one for silly money.

Timeless bike, small money for top quality engineering!

I have only sat on the VFR 1200 but it felt very heavy. Good write ups though.
