K&N Filter, Is it just me?

Is it possible that a brand new clean stock air filter is just as good as a brand new K&N? I have a 2004 3.01 Z4 with a brand new stock air filter from the dealer. But I bought a K&N performance filter because it has the word "Performance", right in the title. I guess I expected more "Performance" with it. I know its just the stock intake, but the z4 doesnt have a bad stock intake setup so I figured a K&N filter would improve on the design. But it doesnt seem any different to me. Is it just my imagination?

Personally i would leave it standard i did use a K+N Panel filter on my old Calibra and the car was a little more lively better throtle response but nothing major so with the Z4 being no slouch would leave well alone

I also use a high flow airfilter. I also have a steptronic trans. What I notice with the high flow airfilter is that when down shifting, I am able to get second or third more often when I want it that with the OEM filter because of the OBC nanny. With the OEM filter, when I go into a corner, I can not always get the gear I want. Those without the steptronic, I doubt you would see much of a difference. I do seem to get 2-3 more miles per gallon witkout the OEM filter. I use an OEM filter when I clean and re oil the filter I use and notice a difference when I forget and leave the OEM in.

if u really want to know, do a test ... with the 2 filters out of the car, take a vacuum put it against the the filter so the air moves in the same direction that it would if you were driving, see if you can feel a difference in air flow?

or u can do the opposite if you have a machine that blows vs sucks, you can see if u feel a difference or have a ball on the other side of the filter to see if it rolls away faster

in the end, the real world difference in power will be minimal at best, but i find w/ the K&N filters, you get to hear the engine more when u step on it

That's one way to ruin 2 perfectly fine filters.

I put a K&N in that someone let me have for cheap. Cleaned it oiled it and can't feel a jot of difference from OEM. Waste of time and money IMHO to go out buying these.

If you mess about testing either as sugested above with vacuum's or air pressure, then bin them both aftewards. As GP20 says's they'll be ruined

Just get a GruppeM intake (y)

Don't these use a oiled K&N cone filter inside a (very) expensive carbon shroud, great for induction noise but perhaps not so great for heat soak. The noise often makes them sound quicker
