K&N air filter

Anyone fitted a K&N air filter to their M? I'm interested to know if it made any difference to performance or economy. They claim better power and economy although when I fitted one to my Golf Edition 30 the economy got worse.

Have a K & N along with a RPI air scoop. Not noticed any difference really although it's a few years ago now since i fitted it so I've got used to it. I think i thought the engine idled and picked up throttle response a little more freely when I fitted it.

Sammyz....don't suppose you can remember what the screws were like for the air scoop? I've lost mine

Are they self tappers?

I can't imagine a filter making any difference stu  but I think you already knew that and were hoping for a different answer

Complete waste of money. And a smart fly could find his way into your engine through a foam filter. Not to mention a crapload of dirt.

RPI scoop fitted with self tappers IIRC. Don't think K&N does any harm to the engine, can't see flies and such getting through it into the engine. Sounds like an internet scare story.

Been running a K&N for a while, feel the same as others that the pro-ported 8/9bhp gain is only visible on the box the filter came in

k&n filters and the like only work well attached to a modified engine,in fact in some cases these type of filters can cause a loss in power and make the engine run lean which is not good! :o.car makers when developing an engine spend millons getting the air flow right that's why the oem filter is the best choice, people who pay £70 upwards are only paying for a bit more intake noise imo

Have used on for 6 months on the Alpina - no noticeable power increase, but did seem to add some noise. Back on OEM now.... :D

Air intake on all Z4s is meant to be top grade... so very difficult to get any real world improvement out of it

I had had a k&N Green on the OEM airbox prior to fitting the Gruppe M.

Made a bit more intake noise for sure and whilst I had cleaned the MAFF too, reponse was a bit cleaner and it stopped stalling. I suspect that was due more to the service it received more than the K&N filter.

Won't do any harm though.

Been running one on the 3.0 for ages and keep threatening to revert to paper. Pain to oil, potentially more engine wear, no performance change whatsoever and risk of exces oil getting onto sensors.

Only reason it stays is I have the full kit to clean and oil in th egarage and whnever I get to do it, it's a 2 minute job and I don't have a ppaer filter to hand..
