I don't claim to be an expert on this but I have read a lot about the subject and done a fair amount of practical experimentation with intakes and exhausts on my S54 cars and others. The S54 engine is a very sophisticated design where the intake and exhaust systems coupled with a Double VANOS permit a volumetric efficiency of 106% in OEM guise. I've previously seen the figures for the back pressure in the E46 M3 (same S54 engine as the Z4M) and it is one of the lowest for a production car with cats and silencers. The S54 engineers will have optimised the OEM intake and exhaust systems to each other so if you make the exhaust more free-flowing by modifying or removing catalysts and/or silencers without improving the air intake system, then you will upset the E/I flow ratio (see:
http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3266) From my own experimentation and datalogging, I found that modifying either intake or exhaust alone, gains nothing, but improving the air intake at the same time as making the exhaust more free-flowing, improves airflow, as recorded by the ECU through the MAF, which in turn, increases Volumetric Efficiency and power output.
With the S54 having a double vanos, the valve timing is adjusted dependent upon engine RPM so that the peak engine torque tends to plateau rather than peaking at a specific RPM, and this works because maximising cylinder charge may require overlap of intake/exhaust valve opening/closing at different RPMs. Therefore, simply making the exhaust as free-flowing as possible may actually reduce cylinder filling.
The RPI exhaust appears to be a simple pipe arrangement with no silencer. The purpose of my modification to the OEM silencers is to effectively convert the silencers to a straight-through system BUT retaining silencing. I have no experience of a bypass pipe so I haven't datalogged a car with it so I've no idea how it might affect performance.
Personally, I hate particularly loud exhausts especially when they drone, and unless an exhaust shows a provable performance gain I can't see the point of spending any money on aftermarket systems. From my experimentation and datalogging I've found it possible to improve the performance and enhance the sound of the OEM silencers for very little cost, and that for me, has been the fun in devising appropriate mods.
