Just test drove a 35i...

For that money there are so many other cars I would have first... 911 turbo, V8 Vantage, DB9, Ferrari 360 (if you shop around), SL55 (or even 65) AMG... Maybe both an ///MC and an ///MR :D

If you can afford it and you want it, then why not..... just negotiate on the price, start low and be prepared to walk away if you are not happy, remember that BMW are offering some good deals on new cars.

Yep. £42k gets you a brand new one with Nav, Bluetooth and USB already thrown in, and this is before any discount is negotiated. Add say £2k of extras minus at least 10% discount (imo) and you are paying around £40k, and this is for a brand new example! :)

I am also seriously contemplating an e89..... I have to keep telling myself the boot is too small with the roof down.

IMO if you can afford it why not? But I think I have my heart set on an 35is.... Just for adaptive suspension and chrome mirrors  And i would noway expect to pay 42 for that... I know people who have got 35i in sport trim with all the toys brand new for that price!!!

X2... :driving:

I think you could get a better deal there.....

Car suits you 100% BTW..... but why not shop around? Also if your financing there are deals with ballon payment running at 6.4% APR.

My wife recently ordered a 1M and managed a discount on that and the finance came down from 10.4% to 6.4% aftre several phone calls.

I got a massive discount on my 35iS. Why not also go around a few independant car dealers and see if they would buy your car.

Then go back to your BMW dealer with a straight purchase.

Hope you get it

How much discount on a 35is should you be looking at?

I personally wouldn't bother. It seems very expensive for not that much of an upgrade. If i were you and i had £28k in my pocket for a car, I would keep the Coupe and get something much more focused as a weekend toy. £28k buys you a lot of car

couldnt agree more. i would prefer a vantage v8 on my driveway rather than a e89 z4 without even having to think about it.!

It's a buyer's market Twinkle, & it's much harder for them to shift a car like this now than it was a couple of years back.

Say given your dad's just boughht a brand new beamer, now you've seen this one you've had a peek at a couple of others elsewhere... you'd like to buy this one... then say what's the absolute lowest you'd take for it if we do a deal (remembering it's getting close to month end & they have quotas)... wait for the price, then when you get the number drop it by another grand, hold out yr hand & say you have a deal at this price.

He'll squirm & if he doesn't agree, say ok I'll ask the other garage what they'll do & turn on yr stilettoz & leave.

Most salesmen will meet u half way if you walk, some if they're really desparate will let you have the full 1k..

Go play with the sharks... & if you get the full extra 1k you can pay for a bottle of champers for me & my girlie for the advice,

J

AMV8 interiors, especially Mark 1's look tatty after a while.....great main dials, rest is cack. New model uses plastic rotary dials, even worse....

E89 interior with design interior is far classier...

Aston have the perceived name but nothing else.....

Lucy go with the E89 or as a second choice a Maser GT for 40 something....you can find good ones. Not as reliable, but better than an AM, and interior better too.....

Well I got over 6k and there was probably more in the deal :| Played off two dealers and it went a bit nuts 8) . Then again I would be a repeat customer.

2 E89s and a 1M so far from the same dealer.

Haven't read all the thread, forgive me, but if you're considering an alternative to the z4 also consider running costs and servicing. I've always found BMW's surprisingly cheap to run; Aston, Maserati intervals for servicing and costs?
I was seriously tempted to look at Porsches when i was buying the z4 but the nearest main dealer is over 34 miles away and a pig of a drive.
I'm pleased of course that you're seeing the light about convertibles but intrigued; how did you find the drive in comparison to your coupe? i would imagine the roadster felt soft in comparison, my only gripe, even with the adaptive suspension, modern cars don't feel as communicative through the steering as older ones.

BMW aren't having a great time with retail sales at the moment,so I rekon you need to bargain HARD. Try a deal on a new one, with September looming, you may get a deal, better still leave it til the last week in September, then start haggling. That's you best time to buy when they have quota's to hit.

There are several nice ones on Pistonheads for around 40k.

If you're looking at 42k cars then you need to read this:

I love all of these suggestions and thank you, but seriously, are you forgetting that i'm only 23 years old with a four year old (un-clean) licence?? Unless any of you know of a magic insurance company who would want to insure me then i'll not be looking at things like these for a while! The insurance for the 35i would be £250 more than my Coupe at £1500, and who wants to pay any more than that for insurance?! And i'm not interested in having a weekend toy, I wouldn't get much use out of it, I tend to drive more during the week, I spend the majority of weekends unable to drive due to being intoxicated

Quite right roofless, it's not just the cost of the car that you have to consider. I agree I don't think BMW is bad compared to Aston, Porsche etc.

I did find the drive a lot softer and smoother. It felt more refined than my coupe, but I have to agree with you that it didn't feel as 'communicative' as the coup. Don't get me wrong it was very nice to drive, but I do think I prefer the more raw-ness of the coupe. The coupe feels much more 'throwable' and agressive.

Anyway, many thanks for everyone's input, I would reply to each of you individually but there is quite a lot so I will try to reply to everyone as a whole here. I've taken everything on board and think I have decided to stick with my coupe for a bit longer. You're quite right that 42k is a bit steep for it. I know I could wangle a bit off, i'm good at wangling :? but still, I have to admit I would prefer one that is around 12 months old. When the salesman said they had one in stock and would fetch it, I was hoping it would be on a '60 plate.

Not to mention that I haven't even been looking for a new car anyway and am perfectly happy with the coup. So it's not like i'm desperate for a new car. I just knew that when I do eventually come to upgrade that I would want it to be a white 35i with red leather. So when he said they had one in stock I was very intrigued and quite excited by the prospect. But I need to be 100% sure and it needs to be 100% the one for me. And I think it might be if it were 12 months old and probably with a manual box. I don't want to buy an auto and then wish i'd held off a bit until I came across a manual.

Plus, the more I look at my Coup, the sexier it gets. I would seriously miss it. I don't think I can say goodbye to it just yet! After driving it places over the weekend, I compared it to the 35 i'd drove on Friday and they are a very different beast. I don't think I need the extra comfort of the 35 just yet... there's still more fun to be had in the coup and I know i'd miss it's raw edge.

So there we have it, i'll not be changing it just yet. But if I do come across the perfect 35i on a 59 or 60 plate, then I may have to look into it again. In the meantime I think I will treat myself to a private reg and a new pair of shoes instead :D

Thanks again for all of your replies, I appreciate them and they did help me with my decision. Have I made the right one?
