Just started looking to by Mk 2 Z4

Hello,
My first post. I've just started lookin for a mk 2 Z4. Given up on the Z3 as mostly junk and rusty. So decided to go for a much more modern version. 2009 onwards with the tin top. Leave in Republic of Ireland so one from the North would be most cost effective way as our import tax is a scandal.
Obviously want one with good history.
4 cylinder would be great as would be my daily driver.
Any thoughts.

You say you have given up looking for a Z3, but there is a non-rusty 2.8 (M52 engine) which has just been put up for sale in mainland UK for very reasonable money. It looks to be a very good one with very good service history and maintenance. M52 engines are pretty bullet-proof. Link.....

E89 Z4s are VERY different to Z3s. More modern, yes, but not necessarily better depending on what you want from a convertible.
You will need to pay more for a good E89 than the Z3 linked above.

It has to be a classic silky smooth straight 6 and not the far less desirable, less powerful, less reliable four pot.

I mean no disrespect to any Z3 available but I just don't like MOT advisory like worn break pads or slightly corroded pipes etc etc. Only an advisory but on the way for replacement and would cost me not the seller.
I have been caught before and lesson learnt

Welcome..

my AI bot I've developed gives a slightly more expanded view..as you've already seen forum members have divergent views...

I very much loved my E89 20i..

Welcome to the E89 Z4 community! You're making a sensible move from the Z3 to the E89 — it's a fundamentally more modern, better-built car with far fewer of the rust and reliability issues that plague the earlier roadsters.

Key Buying Advice for Your Situation:

Given you're looking at imports from Northern Ireland, documentation is critical. You'll need complete service history, ideally with BMW stamps, plus evidence of any warranty work or recalls completed. The E89 had several important recalls (particularly for the N20 engine timing chain and various electronic modules) that should be documented (Vol 1, Ch 36 — Recalls & Technical Service Bulletins).

Four-Cylinder Engine Choice:
The N20 2.0-litre turbo (sDrive20i/28i) is indeed excellent for daily driving — smooth, economical, and plenty of torque for real-world use. However, be aware of the timing chain tensioner issue that affected early N20 engines (roughly 2009-2012). Later engines had revised parts. Look for evidence of timing chain work or confirmation the car has the updated components (Vol 3 covers fault codes and symptoms).

Essential Pre-Purchase Checks:
- Hardtop mechanism: Cycle it several times — listen for unusual noises, check all seals
- Electrical systems: Test all functions including TPWS, parking sensors, audio system
- Service position: Verify all recalls completed and software updates applied
- Suspension: Check for any signs of wear on control arms or bushings

Cross-Border Considerations:
Factor in VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) costs and the hassle of Irish registration. The book notes that documentation gaps can cause significant delays with Revenue.

For comprehensive buying guidance including specific inspection checklists, pricing expectations, and detailed engine reliability information, the complete walkthrough is in Volume 1, Chapter 3 — The E89 Buying Guide.

The 4-cylinder E89 makes an excellent daily driver — you've chosen well!

Great and thank you for the help and understanding my logic. That's why I joined this group to get the right help and advice.
As it will be my daily driver I have made this leap of faith 😃

I spotted a couple of errors in my baby bot..cam chain issue was 2012-april ish 2015..the old system had chocolate bnwon plastic tensioner seen through the oil filler cap..later ones were a much whiter looking plastic..I'll smack its bottom!

I would have said exactly the same but I'd fallen off my chair once I realised it was you putting a case forward for the Z3.

Well done sir there's hope for you yet 😉

Hi Laurence,
I went from a '94 four cyl. Eunos to a 2007 year 6 cylinder 2.5L E85 in 2016.
It has been my daily driver since then - over a 100K miles covered in that time.
Absolutely no regrets. I love the i6 engine.
Best of luck with your search  .

I do currently own a Z3 you know Garrie! Never owned a Z4.

I don't actually think there was any difference in the colours of the cam chain guides on either version tbh. They get stained by the oil, so lower mileage/ newer cars will have lighter coloured plastic than older/ higher mileage/ old oil cars. I have had both (unlike some) and the newer car's guides were darker. That could be just down to more oil staining!

There were no N20 engines in 2009. They were released in 2010 (20i and 28i) and replaced both N52 engines; 23i and 30i. There are some 2011 (and a few 2012) registered N52-engined cars but these would have been old stock. 18i strangled N20 was released March 2013 to coincide with the facelift.

So all 18is are facelift cars. HTH.

Happy Friday.

and I thought you'd owned multiple E89's?
Nah. Had two in the household but both were registered to the wife (for tax reasons)! ;)

I have only ever owned two convertibles in 41 years of driving......the Z3 (thing) and an F33 440i (which was like a land yacht). I am not a big fan of convertibles TBH. Which is bizarre, considering I spend far too much of my time on two car forums dedicated to convertibles. I wonder why I am still here (or there)?
