I'd agree a lot with that. One of the frustrating design elements is the fact they didn't incorporate the door handle into the design line like they did on the e85....a simple thing but could have easily been done.

Yes, the end result is a rather disappointing comparison. The rear end in side profile bears more than a passing resemblance to the E89. Missed opportunity maybe? - sales numbers will be the judge. Perhaps BMW decided to to go with something that was easier to build and could deliver a profit on relatively slender volumes.

Agree on the rear end but I wonder if the concept had no crash protection and obviously the production car has hence the heavier looking rear perhaps?

Unfortunately it happens often. Manufacturers release awesome looking concepts which get us all excited, then let us down with the production model. They're just asking for negative comments IMO.

The big loss for me is the sharknose. Will any one release an aftermarket bumper based on the concept profile ?

To be honest I don’t think they look that far apart. Quite a few of the design cues have made it into the final car. The front end is blunter, and the rake on the windscreen is less, the wing mirrors are different. But as John says, I assume a concept car doesn’t have to go through all of the rigorous crash testing, and so they can just ignore things they’d normally have to account for. Also, the angles of those shots are just a tiny bit different, which seems to have had a large impact on the comparison. Really interesting to see both side by side like that though.

I still worry what the lower range styling is going to look like though, without all the M sport angles and trim. It has the potential to look utter shite.

If that concept car made it through to production, obviously with added tweaks, I for one would be considering to part with my 3.5is. Alas that is not the case, however the interior I do like!

I'm interested in one of these, I've already talked with the local dealer and we are waiting for September 19 when more info will be released.

I''ll be looking to change my 4 series next spring so the timing should be about right. I need to get back to a sports roadster after 2 years in the 4 series, great motor but not much fun!

Considered a Porsche Boxster but decided against it after a test drive recently, I didn't like ride or the noise, and Porsche isn't exactly value for money in my opinion.

If they manage to release that car which is 95% of that concept it'll add even more shame on BMW for their watered down version. The video of this with Jay Leno was interesting, the guys seem to think a lot of this is making the final production car.

The missing buttresses on the Z4 vs concept makes a big difference. Not sure why that was omitted - assuming it actually worked with a folding soft top in the first place?? Other than that it looks like it's had a few pies since the concept, especially the arse but the smaller wheels also add to that impression.

I have said this before, but that's not going to stop me saying it again:

Why oh why do the manufacturers do this? Once they have the concept car built they know damn well what the finished version is going to look like. All this serves to do is to disappoint when the final version is released. Do the manufacturers really think that the publicity around the concept outweighs the disappointment when we see the finished article. I am not interested in how clever & creative their designers are, I want to see how they can combine their cleverness and creativity with actually making a real car!

The concept car had me counting the contents of my piggy bank. The finished version means that I revert to plan A - to keep the Z4MR for ever.

I reckon there's quite a lot of design elements carried over to the production car, if you look closely enough...

  • non-slatted grills at the front
  • duckbill spoiler at the rear
  • vertical rear bumper vents
  • air breathers at the side
  • horizontal tail lights
  • stacked daytime running lights at the front

Things like the side door mirrors would never make it into production from a safety/legal point of view. I don't think the concept has any form of roof either.

You are right in what you are saying about certain points being carried over but they change along the way.
Looking at those pics the production car looks like last years model with the concept being next years model.
Whats with the massive sculpt out the bumper for the reg plate?
And the tail pipes look ridiculous.
Why did they change the door handles from previous models that looked better?
The grill on the concept looks like it goes inwards whereas the production car it looks like its stuck on the front like big fake lips.
Looking between the two pictures from the front angles the concept looks mean and the production car looks bland.

If the concept looks like a 911, the production car looks like a convertible Beetle!
