Just say "I dont know"

Why can't people just say "I dont know"?

The fella who fitted the new brake discs and pads to the 335 didn’t reset the iDrive computer when he fitted them (to show distance to renewal) - he told me that it would reset after 100miles, it didn’t of course, I wanted it sorting and he asked me to go in today- he gave me some further bullshit info - it just sounded BS to me somehow but I wasn't in a position to argue the toss as I didnt have any info.

I’ve just done some internet research and went out to the car and did the reset myself in two minutes flat, no tools, no gizmos.

Not as clever as he thinks he is and I would rather someone says “ I don’t know” rather than give me flannel.
I just hope he's qualified to fit the brakes.

Beware of BS merchants is my mantra now!

Main dealer or Indy Ronk...?

Indy - He came with  from people I know.
I would rather that he had been honest and said that he didn't know - The job was only £100 cheaper than the main dealer.

I fully agree!

My E85 failed its MOT on handbrake "efficiency" last week. I asked what exactly they found, to help direct my investigations. They said the discs are probably old, at which point I informed them that I fitted them not even 2,000 miles ago. Then it was "That's the problem then, they won't be bedded in yet". Yes, that's right, my handbrake needs "bedding in" for over 2,000 miles before it'll work  Please never touch my car other than to MOT it, good sir! :headbang:

I know that feeling too. :headbang:

I took my E91 for an MOT earlier this year, and the tester wanted to fail it on worn rear brake pads. I asked him how that could be when the OBC was showing 28,000 miles before they needed replacement (didn't tell him the fronts "only" had 26K to go). So he decided to pass it with an advisory!

Still it passed the emissions test with the engine apparently "up to temperature". Not sure how, as I'd only driven it 2 miles to get there and E91s don't have a temperature gauge!

Completely agree. Had plenty of BS from garages over the years. Including a service stamp stating the cambelt had just been serviced on a car I bought, that had a chain.

Happily the chap who does all our cars now, is an ex BMW tech with his own small garage. No body knows every thing. I am no spanner man these days, so when my wipers started playing up, I found the thread on here took my tablet to the garage and went through it with him. All sorted in a couple of hours, for a very fair sum.

It seems they are all over the place!
And definitely all over the workplace! We've all had to sit in meetings with colleagues who are trying to string together an illusion of knowledge and competence when actually it's obvious they're a clueless feckwit

What garage is that then? Wife's has had no end of problems with one indy and another local and I'm thinking of going elsewhere this year

Definitely !
I’ve just been talking to a pal who has recently retired and he said exactly the same. It was another reason why he decided to retire.

Haha good enough reason to me! Is 36 too young?

I would say 36 is an ideal age to retire- I wish I could have afforded that luxury!
My retirement was at 60 - I do feel sorry for some of the younger folk of today, I think they’ll be working until their 70’s - my advice to them would be to start planning your escape now

There are a couple I trust localy. For Ins1 and Ins2 I use. They have a tech there who knows his ///M's

https://www.bmgcarsales.co.uk/servicing

And for routine servicing brakes, oil. Little jobs I use.

http://www.scgautos.co.uk

Not the sort of place you would take your p & g. If you just rolled up and took a look. However, Steve is a good honest hardworking guy.

Nice one, thanks

I phoned them today and told them that I had sorted the problem myself and that I wasn’t happy with the bullshit replies - no apologies of course - they only had the barefaced cheek to ask me how I did it so he could pass it onto his workshop!

I told him to look on the internet like I did!

It’ll be a cold day in hell before I go back to see them. There will be other work I need no doubt but it wont be them. If something isn’t right I will only get more BS/ cover up

Adjust the little wheel through the rear discs. It'll tighten the handbrake up  done mine recently. Best to remove the alloy, but can be done through the alloy bolt hole if required.

I adjusted and reset each side about five times last year. In the end I replaced the shoes a few days ago and although it's still a weak handbrake in my eyes, it passed the MOT. It won't even lock the wheels up when rolling in first gear, but the whole system is working correctly. Not much more I can do really. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Exact same issue here :headbang: I think the general rule of thumb is that BMW handbrakes from that era are awful
