Hi all, Here is the prices Ive just recieved (all excluding the bmw emergency service) for extending the bmw warranty:

What does everyone think? Ive already had the cylinder head done and fog lights done under warranty. Ive highlighted the ones I think its worth going for...

Cant see the point of comprehensive with an excess - might as well just go for the named component warranty. The bargain basement warranty looks good value also for peace of mind.

Regards

Andy

My immeduate thought would be Comprehensive, yearly with £100 excess.

Out of curiosity, how much does emergency services add?

forget named component as if the engine goes in a big way it won't be covered and total claim is limited also.

Drive line or comp are only two real options.

Named component will cover roof and ice etc but I wasn't worried about them.

Also don't think excess is a good idea as it's per claim so could cost a lot more or not worth making a claim for.

All in all I didn't bother with the ///M, so need to bank the £70 per month that it would cost me for drive line.

Emergency service is £7/month extra regardless of which of option it comes with.

Comprehensive supports claims upto the purchase price of the car
Named component supports claims upto the purchase price of the car
Driveline only support claims upto £5000+VAT only

sr hutch I think you confusing named component with driveline? Named component allows large claims and includes everything in the driveline plus some of the following additional systems components: clutch, steering, braking, fuel, cooling, electrical, casings.

your right, I was doing it all from memory, should know better

must have been the named component I would have gone for. Ideally the drive line would do me but the 5k limit was a concern.

still not sure what named component is, looks the same as comprehensive: claims upto the purchase price of the car

Comp covers virtually everything, named covers less, I'm not sure the roof is covered, not that it would bother you.

Andy,

My first thoughts were "blimey that's cheap"!! My Comprehensive with £0 excess is £87 per month including Emergency Service. That will be the M-tax then!!! Agree with srhutch on the question of excess.

I come from the perspective that it's just another form of insurance and adds up really quickly to the costs.
Zeds are pretty solid low stressed cars and you don't see many claims that would justify and payout that amount plus a realistic surplus.
Of course like any insurance if you get a claim it's useful, if not then a waste of money.

On those rates and 6 years of Zed I'm £2k plus to the better :)
Do that on all my cars and for 10 years and it would be about £7k to £10k

I have not heard of major, major costs either so with my M, I did not extend due to the low mileage I do anyway.

I would have paid £1900 so far in insurance and I am sure if I had a major expense, due to my relation with the dealer and full BMW service history that I would get good will anyway.

On my 740, at 6 years old, they paid for the entire heating control panel (the dots were starting to disappear) and a windscreen washer pump as they stated it should not have gone.

I may choose to not renew in the future but until I bought a weekday shed the M was doing 10-12k miles pa. It's now more like 2k-3k per year which makes the warranty less necessary.

So far though in 7 months I've had an O2 sensor go which the dealers charge about £400-500 for so I'm halfway back to break-even. Next year though I may just stick the £87 a month in a bank account.

Cj - I agree on non-M Zeds but at +100BHP/litre I don't think the same is necessarily true for the M models. That engine is pretty highly tuned in factory spec. The bills are also likely to be much, much higher too if something does go pop.

Some good points here. So is there a conclusion on whether named component covers things like the roof and sat nav?

Thanks for the opinions everyone. Ive had about £4k worth of warranty work already so not sure what else there is to go wrong.

And, if kept with a FDSH then you would usually get good will anyway.

I notice a N52 has just thrown a con-rod which always gives me second thoughts about not extending it.I think £237 a year (Named component, £250 excess) for peace on mind on anything really expensive going wrong isnt too bad.

Got till the 29th to decide anyway so I`ll chew over it a bit more.

I choses not to extend, done 20k miles last year and the only thing that went wrong was a bracket on my exhaust broke so a local garage welded it back and fitted new rubber mounts for £20.

Lets face it if these cars had a reputation for unreliability how many people would have bought one.

im sorry for asking ,but why should one get extended warranty ??

isnt it true that the costoumer in general can expect a certain problem free use from a product?

maybe a car should at least work fine for 5 years dont you think?

the problem is (and if we keep buying in to that always will be) ,that large company,s as bmw will never agree to this without a lawsuit :x

how ridicoulous is it really that you should pay for repairs ,on a car wich is almost like new costing new about 70k?

and still they can sell you extended warranty,s
