As per the title. Just spent the last week in the north of England (Harrogate) Lovely area. Luckily we have friends that live in a big home in the Kent St. area. So we were able to stay on the cheap. Hired a VW Polo bluemotion from Stansted. Averaged 67MPG as well as managing to not drive on the right all week. Of course it was hard to be on the wrong side of the road in North Yorkshire. As most of the roads are one lane. :D Also stayed in Keswick at Derwentwaters lake in the lakes district. Had a great time. Everyone we met in Britain was very nice and friendly. But I must say. I don't know how you folks afford to live there. Heck. The minster in York wanted almost $50 US dollars for two people just to step into the church. :o So we didn't. Going to try a visit to Ireland in August.

If you had said early we could have had a mini Hoon. Some great roads and countryside, Shame about the Minster it's a pretty church but that is ridiculous

If you think 'Oooop Norf' is expensive, just be grateful you didn't visit the South East

Glad you had a great time

Indeed. Every time we go somewhere as a (3 person) family in London I end up spending enough money to feed us for two weeks. Not much better outside London either

Was just in the Lake District this weekend before going back to the place I won't mention :)

What I did notice from the last time I went, is the additional greed for parking money everywhere now. Wherever you want to park before going to walk, you have to pay £4 - £6 now.

Can't use council car parks either anymore now as you have to pay in advance, bit difficult if you are out walking fells to see if you are back in 5 or 8 hours .. :x

I met a fella from Holland near Stansted at a motorway fuel stop on Saturday. You don't drive a 1967 Volvo powered by autogas do you?

The car park in York was a shock as well. 6Hrs in a covered car park cost 16.50. Don't get me wrong though. We were very pleased with our visit. The folks were fabulous. Lots of very pretty country side. Went to Fountain Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Jervaulx abbey, Middleham Castle, Castle Howard (where the BBC was filming a show) A death in Pembrook or something close to that. Along with many other small village historic church's. Took 550 photos. Even had time to look at a Lotus super seven for sale in Harrogate. I would like to sell the Zed and buy a Caterham to take back to America. Wife isn't to sure though. She wants something like a TR3,4,6 Bug Eye Sprite.
