Just fallen off my seat.....

Just phoned up my local BMW (Ocean) to add an oil change to the key coding they are doing for me next week and they just quoted me £199 just for the oil change

To me this is a ridiculous price. It's a peace of mind oil change as the last service was April 2012 and Inspection is not due for another 9500 miles (Car only covered 21k).

So going back to the times of my Hondas, I'm going to change it myself.

Is there a specific oil that's best to use?

From looking over the interwebs I was going to use Castrol EDGE 5w-30 FST Fully Synthetic. Any good?

I used Fuchs Titan Pro Race on my Type R's so I'm not too clued up on oils for BMW.

Thanks

Mark

The Castrol edge is the recommended stuff, though some us Mobil 1

whats the SAE code for the oil we should use? (or whatever the oil code things are called)

was kind of hoping i could use the chevron 5w30 from costco as i could do all three cars with the one massive barrel they sell. it has a bunch of codes on it but nothing specific like "bmw/ford/vw etc"

ah pants! the chevron stuff is not ll04. cross referencing from places like opie oils and other sites the ll04 grade oils have a ACEA of A3/b4 but the chron stuff is A5/B5/C3

euro car parts have a good deal on Valvoline at the mo £28 /4l and £5 for the filter

Tell them you have been offered a price of £150, but it would be more convenient to get it done with them and you would like them to match it.

See what they say.

Ive always found Ocean pretty reasonable, worth another chat about 4 Plus or fixed price deals?

Or - halfords sell their own brand LL04 spec fully synth which is what I used. Got it on one of their oil deal weekends.

Total cost of genuine filter, oil and sump plug washer was about £65 all in I think.

I bought 7 ltrs (a 5 plus 2) as halfords didn't do 1ltr bottles.

Thanks guys, as its an oil change for my own peace of mind I am going to do it myself now.

I will be interested to see what Ocean quote me for my inspection when it comes around though.

Don't forget the filter change too.
I buy genuine BMW as they are cheap and guaranteed quality.
You'll need a bigg socket, which someone will tell you the size (or forum search) cheap off eBay.

Go on the Castrol site put in your reg number (UK) and comes up with what oil you need....

Best place I have found for Castol edge 5w30 is Costco £28 for four litres or Mobil 1 0W40 is around the same price for five litres.

I always change my oil far more often than necessary. I use an oil extractor these days as I can't be bothered crawling on the floor and always use UFI filters
