Just bought my first Z4

Picked up my first Z4 yesterday, it's a 2004 roadster 3.0l manual, exactly what I was looking for, really enjoying it so far, coming from mx5's / mr2's the performance is in a different league, the engine especially really is an occasion!

One thing I've found however is once warm the exhaust is blowing massively from somewhere under the car! It's a strange one because it doesn't do it anywhere near as badly when it's cold.

I'm going to get it jacked up tomorrow and have a proper look at what's going on but wondered if anyone on here had any pointers, do they commonly fail in a certain place?

Many thanks,

Andrew

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Glad you are enjoying it, but sorry I can't help with your question about the exhaust - hopefully someone will be along soon who can!

Anyway, we do like to see photos of new members' cars.

Congrats on the new purchase!

There's a photo uploader feature on the forum, so no need for a Flickr account  Click the Attachments tab below the window where you type your replies, and add images that way.

Welcome from NZ. I have a similar car, it is a great engine and I am sure you will have lot’s of fun with it. Sounds like we have a similar ability technology wise haha. You’ll find the forum really useful for keeping your car in top order. Cheers

Can’t see your photos. :(

As mentioned above, use the 'add files' button below the box you type in. Just a normal jpeg file will work fine.

I'd expect an exhaust leak to be at the joint between the manifold and the mid pipe. The bolts have a habit of disintegrating due to rust, so a hard jolt could cause a small gap to have appeared.

Had it up on stands tonight and I think it is coming from round the manifold to centre section flanges, the nuts and studs are nearly none existent they've just corroded away.

Also does anyone know the broken actuator in the second picture is for on these? It looks like a suspension height sensor like you get with air suspension can't imagine what it's for on the Z4

I'm guessing you have HID's? That should be the auto levelling sensor for them. One front, one rear.

Another Sterling Grey........that's the way to go!
Slightly lowered?
There aren't many cars I love(ed) but the Z4 3.0 roadster is up there amongst the best. Quiet, gorgeous straight six & darned good looking! In my 4th year of Z'ing & just love them!
Enjoy dear boy, enjoy!

Welcome, as Jamie said it looks like your car is sat on at least lowering springs if not a full kit of some sort, more the height of eibachs than H&R I'd say but i'm no expert. As has already been said your right on the headlight level sensor and as for the exhaust joint, well they all end up like that. Its best to get some heat on them to remove/knock them out so may well be best left to garage to sort rather than DIY.
