I had my car professionally detailed today courtesy of Finer Details in Rochdale, have a look at the link below and see what you think.

http://www.finerdetails.co.uk/photo-gallery/bmw/z4_kr/

I purchased the car approximately 6 weeks ago and the paintwork was in a terrible state for a new car. It went to Finer Details in Rochdale for a polish and BMW Williams Liverpool paid half the price, thus accepting there was an issue in my opinion, yet they refused to pay the full amount and the sales manager came out with an unbelievable statement. "BMW don't give any guarantee's that the paintwork will be perfect".
If you decide to by a car from Williams Liverpool give it a dam good look over when you collect it and refuse it if it's not up to an acceptable standard. I should have done so the day i collected my car but it looked so bloody good (despite the terrible swirl marks and holograms) i stupidly accepted it.
The salesman i dealt with was great, i don't have a single problem with him, just the sales manager and the body shop. Williams Liverpool insisted on polishing the car themselves before i booked it into Finer Details, and despite a slight improvement it was still no where near good enough. The reason for this and i kid you not, they polished the car without washing it first, then they parked the drivers side close to another parked car so that i could not properly examine it when i collected the car.

Iain at Finer Details is very passionate about his work and i am very please with the job he has done.

rochdale is not so far from me, can i ask how much they charge

The work i had done cost £300 (£150 paid by Williams BMW Liverpool) The work done on my car was a 2 stage Swissvax polish i think, and Iain spent approximately 8 hours on it.

why was the car in such bad condition? was it brand new or new to you?

I purchased the car brand new with approximately 6 miles on the clock. BMW Williams Liverpool denied that they had machine polished the car but Iain from Finer Details said that it had almost certainly been badly machine polished to produce such notable swirl marks. I can only assume that the prep department at Williams Liverpool is not up to a good standard of quality, and this is evident in other cars i have seen in their showroom.

£300 seems very reasonable and lots of good write-ups from Iain @ FinerDetails on detailingworld.com

I have yet to hear anyone say anything bad about Iain from Finer Details, or more importantly his work. I first heard about him on the Audi TT forum where he is very highly regarded.

If only he was closer to the Midlands.. I knew him when he first started out from the SEAT forums.

Must find a good detailer near me as my dealership have ruined my paintwork :(

I have bought a new car before and had a detailer on my car whilst still being prepped at the garage. Whilst on a tour of a garage I could see swirls marks on a brand new 89k car while the guys were cleaning it ready for its new owner....

ksy10, you should contact bmw direct and complain

It's on my list of things to do. I wanted to wait for Williams to send their payment to Finer Details before going directly to BMW in case William reneged on their offer to pay half.
When i spoke to the sales manager at Williams about the dealership / BMW being responsible for my paintwork he said that the guy from BMW who would need to come and look at my car would not be able to do so for 2 or 3 weeks. He then had the cheek to say that the guy from BMW may not be able to come to Williams Liverpool and that i may need to take my car to a different dealership for him to look at. Totally unacceptable in my opinion, why should i have to travel to another dealership to have some other person look at my car and have him tell me that's it's deemed acceptable by BMW or Williams standards.
I'm pretty dam sure BMW would not find it acceptable, only Williams which is a franchise. I did not want to wait for BMW to look at the car first as the sight of the swirl marks was driving me mad, not to mention leaving me feel totally gutted that my brand new car looked at thought it had been prepped with wire wool.
I will try to contact BMW today and i will update you if i get anywhere.

Its simple ignorance TBH

In essence, i doubt the majority of new cars (high end at least!) leave the showroom in a fully "detailed" condition. Why? Well becuase they dont go through the correction process such as "finerdetails" - just just go through their own process, which by the sounds of it does involve some form of "buffing" but nothing proper.

It makes me wonder why BMW dealers dont form an alliance with detailers and incorporate this cost into the deal.

From a business perspective, this sort of issue - where we see imperfections in new paint, are going to be very low from the majority of joe public - so it might not make financial sense...

Tricky one...but defo a cause for complaint with BMW HQ! :)

Good luck

Jamie

I have just spoke to BMW customer services and the gentleman who dealt with my complaint has said that he will contact the dealership that i purchased my car from and try and see if he is able to get them to pay the full amount that it cost to have my car detailed. I don't think he will have much luck but fingers crossed. He said that a dealership will not often make more than a 50% contribution with regard to a good will gesture which is apparently what Williams were doing when they offered to pay half of the amount towards putting my car right.

If you want to get in touch with me, PM me...I dealt with a really good bloke at CS - one of the managers, and to cut a long story short, after problems with my 6 Series, got a brand new one with £51K off the price.

I bought a new car after 2 years and he was still on hand to help out with my purchase.
