Just an observation

Just an observation, but there seems to be very few issues in general with Z4M ....judging on the content of the forum... great cars , I mean the Coupes :poke:

definitely different from other cars forums

I've had my fair share of issues over the years...But seems to be okay now.

Put another way, i certainly wouldn't own the car with out the Warranty!

had mine 5 years, had 1 o2 sensor go.... and a new seat early on when the stitching came loose....

Thats it.... in that time id strapped a blower to it, ran 10lbs of boost through it although very low milege just keeps on going.... i do all maintaince overboard but he car has been Very reliable.... Compare that to my audi TT S... this has had 4ks worth of warranty work done in 12 months.... LOL.

Great car!!! i love mine to bits...

In 50,000 miles of my ownership:
  • new engine (plus VANOS, etc.)
  • OSF wheel bearing
  • general module (wiper relay)
Other than the engine, there's been nothing else (no springs, no O2 sensors, no warped discs) that would have been worth having the warranty for - but I sleep better knowing that I'm covered should something happen.

My TT needed >15K of work over the time I had it....total piece of crap! Thankfully the vast majority was warranty work, the rest being maintenance and consumables...

My ///M has had a few niggles and I'm sure there will be more to come, but I love it to pieces anyway

yeah its going that one,,,, i ll replace it with a 1500 quid diesel beater to just sit on the drive ect ect

I had TT as well and it left me stranded in central Amsterdam (broken clutch pedal) .. plus other issues...
at least it broke down in a nice place where you can do a lot of sightseeing ;)

I've had issues as well but don't view it as unreliable. It's never left me stranded for example and considering the use i put it through i reckon it's doing alright.

An E46 diesel is perfect for that purpose, although it will be a bit more than that for a good one

My clutch pedal mechanism fell apart into the footwell as I parked outside my flat. At least it broke down (that time) somewhere convenient! There were plenty of other times it left me stranded, including in the middle of a contraflow on the M4 :headbang:

Mines been good in the 3.5yrs only a window regulator, battery and a new clutch under warranty but that was more a feel thing, garage being helpful than an actual issue. Touches wood!

as ive got the work car which is free of course, my z4m, i didnt really want to spend more than 1500 quid, i want to put some money into the house now, with the little one here now full time im really seeing that it needs some work to make life here alittle easier.... i wanted a beater for general household duties and to not put to many non work miles on my cls, i "shouldnt" be using it for non work reasons, but i do way more than i should.. An e46 330d touring would be perfect, however but ill never get near one @ 1500 bags....

What happened to the engine?.
Final diagnosis was that an intake valve on #1 cylinder was bent - which I believe was caused by the BMW Assist 'technician' who came out to the car when it developed a misfire and showed a yellow EML light.

The lady on the phone told me it was perfectly safe to drive to the nearest dealership, but I insisted on a technician/recovery. Finally a technician arrived and spend 45 minutes revving the nuts off it to 'clear' the misfire that was probably due to dirty plugs (they weren't as he took them all out), or dodgy coil (swapped them all around and the problem persisted). Strangely the computer showed an ignition fault on #2 & #4, not on #1 where the problem was found to be. I think it was probably just a O2 sensor, but the actions of this technician made it much worse.

Originally they said a plug electrode fell into the cylinder and caused lots of damage, then took it apart and said it was valve damage, then took some more time and said it was something else, and something else.

In the end I stopped listening, and fought for 6 months to get a copy of the invoice of work carried out so I could put it in my service history. Took a drive over there (it was in Colchester and I was in Liverpool) on a winter's day (when half the staff were off and the were closing at lunchtime) and got a junior to make me a copy. I heard on the grapevine that he got a bollocking for doing so, as there was stuff on there that they were trying to charge to me AND to BMW Warranty.

In the end the whole cost was covered under warranty bar an hour or two of labour - and I couldn't be bothered arguing over that as I'd got my £3500 'investigation deposit' back once I'd proven it had been paid for by BMW Warranty (hence my need of, and their reluctance to supply me the warranty invoice).

That's a bad tale! :(

As for spark plugs breaking up and falling into cylinders: I know of at least three occurrences and was travelling to The Ring 2 years ago with a friend driving his S50 Z3MC when this happened to him about 150 miles from getting there. Fortunately, no damage done in this case, but others haven't been so lucky.

I don't know if I believe their final story either, as they also replaced the VANOS unit (according to the invoice). Surely they would have just replaced the short-engine and plopped the old/working VANOS unit back on top?

What's worse was I had an independent engineer go and check it out for me as I was getting nowhere with them, and the 'score' in the camshaft that they said was caused by the bent valve (yeah right) was actually just a smudge of soot about 1cm long. They'd not even felt it to see if it was a scratch/gouge or just a soot mark :headbang:

Although it was only 2 weeks from the breakdown to having a new engine - it was just the arguing to and fro about my deposit that they'd categorically stated would be returned once BMW had paid out. Mondial/BMW did pay the dealer a month after I got the car back, but they kept telling me it hadn't been paid and so they couldn't refund my deposit :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I'm nearing the end of my warranty... so I'm hoping everything goes good from now.
In my time of ownership I had the following things replaced under warranty:
- New sat-nav screen
- New cable for the front lights

Just curious if engine failure something that happens a lot?
