Just 2 days to go...

Until BCA turn up to collect the Merc. I’ll miss this car, it seems to have improved with age. With the Z still having its engine or gearbox issues (weird power delivery and slushy or inappropriate gear shifts) I’m seriously tempted to call time on Z ownership after 8 years, have I had the best from it(?) and stump up the extra cash to keep the Merc and benefit from it being six years younger, luxurious and practical.

Totally torn tho given the effort to keep the Z and benefit from the style sound and power.

Just two days to decide...

Sign of getting older that Gary :P have to admit i do like the "waft" of our C Class estate especially right now with the state of the roads .
Plenty of driveway panache but little character & certainly never makes me think about going out for a drive just for the sake of driving :driving:
Tough call

Certainly a tough call when I’ve no guarantee I’ll ever get my old 35i back. It’s never been the same since the injector replacement:(

That is a shame , is it worth taking out a similar DCT 35i to compare like for like :?

You've certainly had difficult ownership with the 35i - not surprised your straying from the Z4 fold

Waft or character. The decision is yours. :)

Does it have character tho? Handling is poorer than the C, power and sound is better of course, but it’s ageing and that complex engine is playing up. The roof is a worry due to complexity and age and it’s needing brakes wheels and tyres soon.

Sure it has Character. Just not as much as say a Fiat Coupe or TVR.

Could always trade them both in and try to source the newest 35is you can find?

With all due respect; Not a chance. I’ve had enough of the N54 ‘quirks’ to last a lifetime. IS wouldn’t give me anything extra other than a few more hp that I can’t use on local roads anyhow.

I know it might sound a bit mad but if you still want a 2 seater vert in your life have you considered swapping your 35i for a newer 20i or 28i and maybe a remap. Keeps you in an e89 and if you cant use all the 35i power already it might well make sense. Alternatively what about a complete change into say the current Audi TT

Sounds like you have made up your mind though, so I would keep the Merc for a while (or until bored stiff).

Strange though as I seem to remember you were quite negative about the Merc and did not really care for it when you got it, what changed?

Also depends what type of social activities you do, if you like driving in Europe where the roads don't have craters, then the Merc would be rather boring. If you only need an A--> B car, then I would say the Merc is a better bet especially as it will probably take many years (if ever) before the UK roads become usable again.

Ireland used to be like that with terrible roads, but they used European funding to get some decent roads made but with Brexit that is unlikely to happen to Britain ...

Get rid of both and go for somethng like the M240i or M140i if need a bit more boot space, more useable and comfortable than a full fat ///M and just as nippy in the real world. The Merc whilst a nice car in itself is just an estate car end of the day.

Tim.

You can’t blame Brexit, our roads have been appalling for years! :o

Chop ‘em both in, sell a kidney/child and get a C63 S Estate. Absolute beast.

Hi Maniac,

You used to have a pic of the Merc in your sig and I am embarrassed to say that I wanted one ever since. Had mine 2 years now and although I love the look if the car, the drive isn't everything I hoped for.

Still pretty decent for an every day car and on the motorway, she is a joy. Recent fall out with Merc over brake discs have led me to not want another.

I would go BMW 4 series next if I wasn't opting out and taking the missus Santa Fe. Ditching the company car will save £9k a year.... :o

All done. BCA guys have been and gone. A last look.

In the end the paid for car ( albeit needing further attention ) and saving 7/8 grand, won out.

If I can sort this issue with the Z then I’ll keep it. If not then the market awaits....
