Just 11nm torque for valve cover??

Is this definitely the correct amount of toque for the valve cover bolts? I would imagine they would be a lot tighter than that!
I'm even wondering if my torque wrench is incorrectly set. I'm sure that's unlikely.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
You didn’t mention which engine you have, but on e.g. M54 it’s only 10Nm.

Sounds about right - I've just done some bike clearances and those cam covers were 10Nm, just nipping up against a rubber seal and the covers are quite thin and can crack easily.

Thanks gents!

That's quite surprising! I would imagine they should be much tighter. To ensure, no air is sucked through the seal. I have tightened mine around double that I imagine :headbang:
Should I leave it as is? Bearing in mind I have used the car for long journeys etc. Perhaps it would create weak points in the rubber seals if I loosened to correct torque

N52 is 8NM and then you leave the single use bolts for 30 mins before a final quarter turn.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago without any issues.

There will be positive pressure inside so oil will leak out rather then air being sucked in. If its not leaking now then leave it alone till it does.

Thank you both.

It's an m54.

Rockhopper - what you say makes sense. I will leave it alone. Hopefully, there won't be any issue :driving:
