A friend has gone to the States for a few months and has lent me his cheap but good telescope. Its a Skywatcher Heritage 130P and is a very simple affair. Anyways, I held the iPhone to the eye piece and this is what I saw, Jupiter and her four Galilean moons.

You could even see the bands on the planet, I really enjoyed it. Not sure I can take it as far as some, but for the novice it was a great experience. I am looking forward to seeing Saturn and the moon. Anyone else into star gazing?

That's pretty cool indeed! Never had, used or even seen a telescope up close though. But I'm sure you can see some amazing things now and then.

I would love to have a decent telescope, but wanting to be tucked up in bed and warm is not mutually conducive to see much

That's ace! Shame it's light for quite a bit at the moment as my nephew has a really good telescope (not sure why I've never been given one when I've asked for my birthday or Xmas for years) and he would love to see that. However he's 4 so staying up that late maybe a challenge.

Cool picture. I've only got an old pair of binoculars, but do enjoy watching the night sky. 8)

Especially from the Zed.

The Skywatcher Heritage 130P is only £130 but as buzyg says, you need to know your way around the sky, I use skywalker 2 on the iPhone.

I used to have a reflector telescope but found the thing so difficult to set up and align that I gave up and flogged it.

Also I found that my inclination to lug all the stuff outside and set up in the freezing cold winter rarely coincided with a clear sky.
