Jump starting

Phone the RAC/ AA - Make youself a coffee and say sod it!

If or when you buy a battery charger make sure you buy one that is able to charge a battery from the completly flat state.

So ... how were you going to jumpstart the car as per your opening post without leads?

The battery charger from LIDL which was recommended on here is excellent value for money if you can get one.

Ive got one and it has the charge from flat facility (pulsed charge) Good value for £15 - I dont know how long it would take it to get enough charge into a flat battery for a start attempt tho!

I reckon a battery pack is a good investment to stick in the corner of the garage. I wonder if that should be kept on a trickle charge??????

it won't be a problem. just remember to connect the jumper cables in order.

1. red connection on to the +ve of the Z4
2 red on to the +ve of the car to be started.
3 black on the car to be started -ve connection
4. black on to the Z4 -ve connection.

When doing this make sure the car to be started is in neutral, handbrake on and ignition OFF

Start the Z4 and run at about 2,500RPM for about 1 minute to give some charge to the discharged vehicle.

then with the Z4 running start the discharged car.

Wear safety glasses and be aware of any rotation belts / pulleys

I was always told to connect black to black first - and red to red second and connect the "to be charged" battery first and disconnect from the "charging vehicle" first (after the freelander starts) - but its probably over cautious, i would buy the best jump leads i can find though - cheap ones just dont work

If you connect black first, then you are at risk of shorting when you are using the red cable and touch anything metal, so that is a bad idea.

If you do red first, and touch the second car, it is not grounded to the first car so no shorting takes place. If the black cable was in place, it would have shorted.

Once red is in place, and you touch the car with the black cable, it does not matter as it is just an earth connection which is what you want anyway.

I stand corrected - i have been doing it wrong for 30 years

If its a relatively new freelander and still under warranty you probably still have Land rover assist. In that case if you call them they will come out and you'll be on your way :)

Shows what a college education in motor vehicle technology and an apprenticeship can do for you..... even if it was a very long time ago!

You connect live/red first.

I was going to jump it after I went to fetch jump leads PVR, durrrrr!,

Battery is on charge and its putting 100% charge in so it is the battery, fingers crossed.
Takes about 3 hours.

Got a charger from our local cheapy shop for £13.99. Switchable 6v/12v. No jump leads tho so I hope this works.

I just used common sense

I've got a set of fantastic jump leads that were given to me by the Volvo truck dealer for starting trucks. They must be about 3m long and weigh a ton. I ought to weigh them in as I'm sure they're worth a bit in scrap :D

auto definately can't be bumped

i see no reason why you can't jump start it, i have used the zed to bump start other cars

you could just put jump leads across the vehicle and leave it for 15 mins, that would charge the battery

Nah, just the fact that you were going to jump start the car but did not have jump leads :P
