Joy !...at last!

Well if you have read my previous posts you will know of the cowboy dealer who sold my wife her Z4, how he put black silicone over the airbag light and how this ruined the instruments etc. Well the car sat unused for weeks while I sent the instruments off to be repaired only to be told "yes we know what's broken but BMW wont sell us the part to fix it". There are many different part numbers for instrument clusters depending on engine and transmission but I managed to get one the same second-hand and fitted it (a very simple job). Happiness as all instruments worked but mileage was too high and a number of warning lights were lit. A trip to a specialist sorted this and all lights were off and mileage was corrected! He had even managed to re programme my airbag module which the diagnostic computer said was faulty. I picked it up on a sunny Sunday and drove home. I could tell how much fuel I had, I drove past speed cameras without worrying and the temp gauge was normal. At last I started liking the car! I'm not a fan of autos as my wife is but in sport mode with the big 3 litre six it didn't have the indecisiveness of autos which is what I hate. It hung on to the revs and when I moved the shift to the left for manual mode I hung on to the revs too! I am so happy that I am finally starting to like this car. Unfortunately the wife has fallen out with it. She wants reliability for work and as its let her down it wont be forgiven...a lesson there for me to take note of I think. I wouldn't be surprised if the royal command is given to get rid which will be sad as it really has not been the poor cars fault, more the butcher at the garage who ham-fistedly bungled his bodge. If we get some more sunny days I hope to talk her round and stick around this forum a bit longer.

Well that's a terrible story and a dreadful start to Zed ownership.

Glad you're getting a taste of why we are all on this forum - enjoy it while you can!

:driving:

Such a bad story, but hopefully one that's now in the past.

Let' s hope that your Mrs forgives the car now! Good luck!

Some proper cowboys out there. Well done for getting the car back in shape. Hope the Mrs forgives the bad start and you both get to enjoy the ownership of a fun sports car.

Wow that's a horrid tale! I thought I got mugged of with my disappearing paintwork!!

Try and keep it a while and prove its reliable

Glad you stuck with it enough to see the pleasures
, the Z4 is fundamentally a very reliable car & what problems do arise are for the mostpart relatively easy & cheap to fix by comparison to many other "ordinary" cars
Stick around & feel free to share some pics

Cheers guys. I have had the roof down today when I went to get a slow puncture fixed and its been great. Just as a matter of interest the specialist said that when they took apart the cluster to put the silicone in they had just pulled the needles off and this is not the way to remove them as they have to be turned slightly first. In doing this they pulled the shafts which is what caused them to all fail and start misreading.

Oh dear Steve, you need to discard the 'lucky heather', it is just not working!

Dealer was a place at Brighouse called Highline Motors. I am totting up the costs and have the papers to go to small claims court to recover costs. The thing you cant get recompensed for is the hassle and the fact that we will no doubt lose money if we trade it in or sell it because she has lost faith in the car and all the time will be waiting for something else to go wrong. I know that might not be logical but its understandable.

I can sort of understand what she is saying, but this car came to you like this. It's now been fixed, so there shouldn't be an issue. As you say get her out in it with the roof down on a nice day.

sorry to here that tale of yet another con from a dealer, unfortunately the car trade is a get rich quick trade for a lot of unscrupulous people . he went to a lot of trouble stripping out the cluster to put in the sillicon in a bid to absolutley trick you as he knew a light on is an mot failure. wot a shite, he deserves as much bad publicity as you or any one else you know can give him, verbally and on social media at every opportunity !! i would also involve trading standards as if the speedo has been out who's to say he didnt "clock" it as well while he was in there. he should take the car back with full refund, or pay you several hundred quid to keep it. trouble is , its actually almost impossible to prove He did it and he wont be a nice person anyway because he did that in the first place, so he could turn agressive . lets just hope Karma exists

I went to Trading Standards and was left very disappointed. They said that I could take him to court but they knew him and said he would just close down and open under another name. Not very constructive really. While the issues we know about are fixed the problem for her is she is now waiting for the next bodge to show up although she knows there most likely isn't any. Its that feeling of worrying she will be on the M62 at 10 o clock at night on a winters night when something will go. I am a believer in karma though sometimes it needs a helping hand.

well lets hope that was the only bugbear, the more you drive it without anything else showing up, the more your confidence in it will be restored.it may well turn out to be a good car that gives you a lot of fun. best to forget about the garage twat , rise above it with the knowledge that you managed to fix what he couldnt, . remember tho to steer as many people away from his business as you can. good luck.

Hopefully what goes around, comes around. What sense is there in selling a customer a car in a dangerous condition? Do they not have mothers, wives, daughters? Glad to hear you've had it all sorted, perhaps your wife might change her mind after a while. Best wishes.

If you are thinking of keeping it why not take it to a reputable dealer and get the car thoroughly checked over - full service etc. At least this would give you some peace of mind.
