Jonny, I removed mine so I could get them painted to match the car. As others have pointed out it is quite fiddly, but can be done.
Yes, you will probably break one or two of the clips, but it shouldn't make a difference as there are enough all around the hoops to reattach firmly.
Tips:
I used my set of plastic trim removal tools (often sold as car stereo removal tools). If you don't have a set of these you shouldn't be touching the car interior for just about any job (IMHO).
Use a heat gun (or hairdryer) to warm up the plastic to make the covers easier (more pliable/flexible) to remove. Obviously, don't go too hot and melt things...
BE VERY PATIENT! Don't rush or force things. You will curse everyone who who was ever involved in the design of these hoops, but they will come off if you are careful and patient.
I think starting at the top might be the right idea (I can't honestly remember exactly what order I did mine), and work your way around bit by bit. Some bits that are prised open *might* close again while you're working on the other side, don't go looking for the nearest hammer to "fix" the F*****g thing once and for all

just go back to it and prise it open again.
Best of luck, and remember, forum advice is free, but the risk is always yours. If you munter the hoops trying to get them off you have been warned... :telloff:
And if it all works out fine, then :happyclap: :roundel:
