Jobs to be done

I've just taken ownership of a 57 plate Coupe and over the last couple of weeks of getting to know it, I've found a few jobs that need done. I've already ticked a few off the list. No idea if anyone is remotely interested but it's a list I can work from and update. Might even post a few pictures of befores and afters.

Replaced blown fuse on 12v socket. But I had to google where the fuse box was, and how to get to it!!
Once the fuse was replaced I then realised the socket had some surface corrosion so still wasn't working.
So I removed the ashtray and console and got the drill/dremel into it to clean up the metal. Seems to be working fine now.

Filled up the screenwash only for the whole lot to leak out overnight. So did some internet sleuthing and bought a new grommet and got some PTFE tape around the pumps...it's way better and the reservoir now holds about 80%. So might pull it back out and get some vaseline on the joints to give a better seal.

Foglamps - both corroded and very grubby inside. Offside not working at all. Looks like a fairly straightforward job to replace them. But they're around £90 each, plus led bulbs....so I'm not rushing into that.

Exhaust - had a back box delete. It's a bit noisy for my taste so I managed to source a back box in Blackburn and get it shipped (£130 all in). That's to be fitted. Might be able to do it myself with the help of my mechanic bro in law but if not, then it'll be a custom exhaust shop not far from home. Downside is, I'm working on site full time and the shop only opens 9am-5pm Mon to Fri. Means a day off work just to get the guy to look at it. Then another day when the work is getting done.

Longer term, I'm not 100% convinced that I like the two tone alloys...I'd love a set of CSL or similar wheels. As good as 19s would be, I'm not sure I'd want to do it. Might stick with 18s. Depends what's available when I'm looking for real.

Headlamps also covered in a tinted film.....looks decent but like the wheels, it's not something I'd have done so that may be removed but I'll wait till winter and see if the lights are good enough. If not, then it'll be removed and if I need to get the DA polisher onto the lights to clean them up then that'll be another job to do.

3rd brake light was an advisory on the MOT - Two leds aren't working. So I'll get a new one. But I think I'll tint it to match the rear lights, because as far as I can find, there's no such thing as a clear version. That would be perfect but I don't think they exist.

EDIT to add...Handbrake is pretty weak. It can't really hold the car on a slope unless you really pull the handle hard....much harder than I'd normally pull the handbrake so I think it needs some adjustment.

Not sure if you'd prefer standard, but I fitted LEDs to my fog lights for next to no cost.

Post a pic of what you did, if you have some!
Really sorry, but I'm crap at remembering to take photos.
All I have is a before and after of the fog light assemblies.
But basically the steps were:
1. Remove the lights
2. Soak in hot water
3. Carefully prise the lenses off
4. Clean and paint the back sections
5. Fit the cheap-o DRL units with the sticky pads provided onto the base of the back section.
6. Drill a small hole through the bulb holder to pass the wires through.
7. Refit the bulb holder and feed the wires through.
8. Fill the rear of the bulb holder with gasket sealant to make it waterproof.
9. Drill a couple of small holes in the bottom face of the lens to help prevent future condensation problems.
10. Refit the front lens using a suitable sealant
11. Bolt it back into the bumper.
12. Splice the DRL wires into the fog light wires. Have to remove the plug to do this. Also worth a trial fit first as I found the DRLs only work with the wires one way round. I used aircraft in-line splices with heat-shrink sleeves, but any method that is waterproof will do.

So currently, to get the DRLs to work I have to switch on my sidelights, then switch on the front fogs.
There are other options to run an ignition live from the fuse box to have the DRLs always on without any need for other lights. It's a personal choice and I went for the simplest answer.

Thanks.....looks interesting. Not sure I want the hassle of splitting/cleaning/painting/sealing the existing lights but it might be worth a shot to see how it goes. Worst case, it fails and new lights are required anyway.

Well the DRLs cost me £4.39. I had a tin of black paint already and the whole job took a couple of hours.

I didn't realise it was that straightforward!!
I'm off to look for DRLs!!

There is another option for you.
I'll be breaking this car end of June as sadly getting it though an MOT will cost double it's value.
So my fog/DRLs will be available.

Clear 3rd brake lights are available from BMW, Amazon, or eBay.

They're not.
I have a Coupe - clear 3rd brake light doesn't exist....I've searched everywhere and seen other on forums say the same

Glossed over that you had a coupe. Similar light but different part number from the roadsters.

Yeah, the roadster light is smaller. I put a clear one on my roadster back in the day and surprisingly, it was cheaper than the red one.
I wish I was wrong and there was a clear light. I'll maybe think about tinting it since clear doesn't exist.

Couple of good jobs sorted yesterday.

Pulled the front bumper off to give me better access to the foglights and screenwash system.
Old foglights removed and replacements fitted. Upgraded the bulbs to LED too.

Then the screenwash....decided the best way to find the leak was to connect the system up with the bumper off and fill the reservoir to see what happens. Leak fixed. Looks like the offside connection to the headlight washer jet had only been pushed on part of the way. Someone had even tried to secure it wit plastic tie wraps. They were removed and the pipe pushed fully onto the jet. Hey Presto!!.....no leak with a full reservoir.
Put everything back together and the bumper is now sitting a bit better than it was before so I wonder if someone had it off to try and fix the leak but didn't align it properly?
Who knows.

Main thing is, leak and foglights both now fixed.

Also had a look at installing the backbox. Looks fairly simple but that might be next weekend.
