job offer - but am I being too greedy

An effective creative department is a dictatorship ruled by tantrums.

If you'd have mentioned that in your initial post, I'd have said what the hell, why didn't you go for 50% :D

Weird you didn't gave a job spec already... First thing I ask for.

I was told enough to say i was interested in starting a discussion. I think a lot of the people that work for big companies or even more traditional or longer established industries with traditional structures, rules and proper things like HR departments may struggle to understand my industry.... lord knows even i do sometimes.

I work in design, more specifically digital design so a very young industry. It's a small industry verging on minuscule in Glasgow. As such I know the company, i've known the directors of the company many years. My path has crossed with several people that work there over the years (i've previously sacked 2 of them from somewhere else :( ). Believe it or not they are the second largest agency in the city with a massive 40 staff :D Like i said, it's a small industry.

My friends that work for large banks, public sectors and even those in proper jobs like engineering really struggle to get their head round it. Actually, trying to explain it has made me realise just how chaotic it actually is.

I worked in heavy industry and it's amazing how many 18 stone brick sh**house princesses there are. Although creative types do get labelled as being awkward to manage, I don't imagine it's that different...

Nah, that makes complete sense - one of the jobs I looked at was for a very small owner managed marketing/insight/creative company, and thinking about it I never even bothered asking him for a job spec. We just talked it through - as I knew and rated him from work I had done with him with customers in the past, as he did me - and it would have been peachy as I'd have been able to write my own job spec if/when I needed one. Didn't work out though, he was on the edge of a merger of his business with another, protecting cash, and we couldn't agree terms / money solid enough to ensure I could still pay the mortgage. Shame as it would have been a sweet job :(

Everything all sorted. Job accepted and notice handed in.

Onwards and.... erm sideways.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Glad you got things sorted.
Hope it all works out well for you.
Enjoy, impress and then get any increases due and justifiable.

Salaries have dropped in many areas because of the level of unemployment especially if you are out of work when applying, though if you're in a specialist area it's the old adage of Pay more initially for a Professional, end up paying even more for an amateur.

Suggest you say you'll take their first lower offer (not the revised one) on the written agreement when u complete your probation you get what you asked for.(don't put date otherwise they will just extend probation)

This way they get you cheaper if you turn out to be crap & so can sack u, pay u what you're worth if u perform!!!

Will motivate u as well...

The very best I could have done when moving recently - in a sales job, in the same industry, doing the same thing - was 20% and an increase of my bonus from 50% of my salary to 100%. But my previous employer is notorious for underpaying in the context of their market and I am gods gift lol. When I accepted a job I ended up with 10%, a reduction in my bonus to 40%, but a very good benefits package that totals an additional 25% of my base. Assuming I hit my targets my total take home is about 15% more, about £30k less than I could have been on... ...

isn't there a psychometric test in there somewhere....what is Bing's new total take home?! :)

Someone could probably have a decent bash, but I approximated the single number that is in there and it doesn't take account of my sheer brilliance :D

Congratulations Mr Flow, really hope it all works out

He's not taking anything home coz he negotiated working from home... that's either called taking the p!ss or good negotiating

Good negotiating combined with openness & honesty... Helped by an HR recruiter who was on the ball and got to the point very quickly. Saving me about £5k p.a. ... Though the same deal as with my previous employer, so a net zero effect on income.
