im going to buy a trolley jack tomorrow so i can get the wheels off for a proper clean. any advice on jacks or axles stands and where to best place them? Any pics?

The jack should have a minimum saddle height of 3 1/2 inches. Use the rear jacking point (check your owners manual) and the jack should lift both wheels off the ground easily. And, if you are worried about the jack pad marring the finish under the car a hockey puck placed on the pad works great.

If you can find a jack labeled low profile then that should work, make sure it can support the weight of the car (IMO a little extra). My jack has a round circle with grooves/depressions in it (part that meets the jacking point) and our cars have a square jack point by the wheels. It's not a big deal IMO but something to consider, as the previous poster said, you can throw a hockey puck or something if your uncomfortable with how it meets up.

Do they make low profile jack stands? I bought a set (i was dumb and didn't look close at them) they are rather high....higher than I feel comfortable jacking the car up to slide them under the car. Am I just being paranoid and you really can jack a car up really high?

As sad as it is you won't go far wrong with Halfords, or even the little car spares guy round the corner, having just looked at various jacks most of the shops seem to keep the same ones in stock mainly Draper or Sealey, it all comes down to how much you want to spend on one, I ended up just getting a BMW E46 jack from a breaker that now lives in the back car in case of emergencies, as one of the previous posters said the axle stands are a different matter the Halfords ones are very high and have to lift the car too high IMO to get them under anywhere, I would have a good shop around for these and find the lowest ones you can.
