Jack Charlton RIP

When I lived in North Yorks he lived in a neighbouring village where I used to take my daughter for dance lessons. Parking there was at a premium. On one occasion I nipped in quickly ahead of him and pinched a parking space that he wanted. Down came the window of his Range Rover followed by a stream of very colourful Anglo Saxon words with me described as various parts of the female anatomy. Fortunately another parking space became available or I think I might have suffered a black eye at the very least.

It sounds like you had a lucky escape there - he certainly didn't take any prisoners on the pitch!

Sad news though. :(

Yes if it hadn’t been that another driver pulled out creating another parking space I could have needed some medical treatment. He lived in Gt Ayton for quite a few years and did have a few spats with some of the locals. But he did a great job for England. He was truly a ‘stopper’ centre half. The ball might get passed him but the man never did. If you remember he was a team mate of Norman Hunter who died recently. You have to wonder how today’s prima donnas would have coped with the likes of Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter and Billy Bremner?
