I've done my back in!!

As the title suggests at the age of 45 I've injured my back for the first time. I was lifting something into the boot of the car the other night at B&Q and although I didn't feel anything at the time, yesterday my back got stiffer throughout the day (spent 9 hours in the car on business) and by last night I was in a load of pain with lots of back spasms.

Any advice from the medics? It's lower back, finding it hard to stand up straight at the moment and the spasms are very frequent. It's bloody inconvenient - was supposed to be in Birmingham today, London tomorrow and again over the weekend with the g/f.

Should I go to the doc or just rest and take it easy for a couple of days?

I've lived with a bad back for 20 years, my advice is plenty of ibuprofen and lie flat and rest if you can. Wait for official word from docs though!

Steve, I know you're a busy chap but book a session or two with an osteopath or sports massage. Pills and nurofen gel are good, but to get to the route cause you should really get a professional to limber you back up

Oh no! That sucks. (Came over all American then)

Ranski's advice is good if you want to get it sorted sooner rather than later.
This happened to me once and getting in and out of the car (Z3) was agony, you have my sympathies.

Nuru massage will sort it out OG......your back will still hurt but you wont be thinking about it!

Bad back or trapped sciatic nerve ? The action you describe would reflect each time i have trapped my sciatic nerve
Only ever had the latter (3-4 times ) but can sympathise .
Strangely in the sciatic case cold eases but heat aggravates .
Bags of frozen peas on the lower back & keep active plus prepare for at least a week / 10 days until pain free .
FWIW i always find getting in & out of the car plus long spell's behind the wheel makes it worse

As above tablets & gels only mask the problem as opposed to cure & decent physio can help reduce the recovery time .
They should also highlight how it occurs & how to avoid in future

Speedy recovery

I would not worry. Typical muscular strain.

Will sort itself out in a couple of days.

Hi,

Any lower leg pain? If not it's unlikely to be sciatic (Which is good news - Mr Wilks week to 10 days is as good as it gets for a trapped/pinched sciatic nerve, I trapped mine last year and was in near constant pain for 4 1/2 months).

Co-Codamol and diclofenac used together work well if it gets unbearable

All the best!

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure it's muscular judging by where the centre of tenderness is. It's the bloody spasms that are the worst. Halt you in your tracks. I can't really find anywhere comfortable either to sit/lie either. I've got no referred pain anywhere else.

I've done the ibuprofen gel and paracetamol but it hasn't really done a lot tbh. Looks like I just need to be patient and take it easy. When it eases a bit I'll need to sort some physio/massage I think.

Zed less for a while by the looks of it. Had a really nice weekend lined up in London too - first class train, 5-star hotel, Sunday lunch booked etc.

I am just getting over pulling my lower back muscle again! ........ I can just echo what others have said , worst thing you can do is lie down and take it easy for too long , I was told by a physio walking is good but dont dawdle, walk as if some one is holding your head up by the hair , walk tall , sitting too long isn't good either , sounds strange but what I did was set a cooking timer up to buzz after about an hour and just go and move about a bit , try not to bend from the waist when lifting I know it's impractical at times , try not to twist from the waist when holding heavy objects, so much to remember ....... good luck

Sorry I'm not a medic despite my user name.

However I've suffered from back pain for may years, it has been diagnosed as sciatica. If it gets really bad then I can hardly move for a couple of days and just need to rest. Ibuprofen seems to be about the best for pain relief.

Sympathies!

I wouldn't take a chance and do nothing, go see the best chiropractor nearest to you. Next door neighbour has just done his back in and he's been told its a slipped/ruptured disc. Hope you get sorted quickly.

You may want to try an acupuncturist OG. wife has had back issues for years (courtesy of a bad car accident), only thing that has relieved the pain was a course of acupuncture.

Personally I'm not a fan of chiropractors... I know others swear by them.

Sorry to hear that OG. I suffer from back pain every so often and the best remedy beyond painkillers is to work your core muscles doing a few pilates moves. Back specialist showed me this years ago and whenever I feel the twinge I head it off at the pass with a bit of core back work. Amazing how much relief it can provide.

Ouch!
Sounds like muscle spasms to me. I have the same. Keep moving round, and it should not get any worse. Half the problem is you are too scared to move around too much because it hurts if you do something and push it too far. Work out what you can and can't do, twisting, un bending bending etc. Use your arms to support you doing this but keep doing everything else.

I would recommend getting a back support like one of these whilst it sorts itself out. I find them invaluable when I have a tweak at work.

The pain killers will take the edge off the pain ( I prefer tablets to gels) and enable you to move around with less fear of pain. You might be OK to get to London, so don't cancel the tickets or give them to someone else yet.

While the above advice is well meant, you need to see a doctor for a correct diagnosis.
Their is nothing more frustrating than a bad back ,I have suffered with on and off for years.
