I think Mr Essex got his real wish...He had everyone talking about him and his Z, whether it's good or bad I don't think he cares.

I'm now off to install a Rolls-Royce RB211 into my Z, one-upmanship and all that...
Guess you'll be needing a RFBBBK* with that then....

* Really F*cking Big, Big Brake Kit

I have no idea about what is or isn't possible with the 2.0l engine.

However I think the suggestion to JE about retuning his existing engine (Turbo/supercharger) rebore racing cams, whatever is possible would be sound advise.
Giving him the uniqueness of having the fastest and best 2.0l Z4 in the UK. :driving:

Good luck JE with whatever you decide to do, but maybe put the thread up when your decision has been made.
A build thread would be good too.

This. I completely agree. I liked the V8 idea, but i understand the attachment that JE has to his Z, so keep the power plant and make it the best 2.0 it can be!

Hi JE !!

Don't get upset by all this feedback .. feedback is a wonderful gift, you can choose to act on it or ignore it.

You could always keep your lovely example as is & keep and cherish and just purchase a more powerful model and do the same .. as then you will have both (best of both worlds)

anyway what ever you do I am sure we will all be interested, and you do not need this forums permission to do your mods even though you attract -ve and +ve comments.

One thing is for sure though :) !!! this forum will not be the same without you :)

So please keep us updated on your progress and enjoy what ever you do.

all the best

I estimated that, with dismantling the complete drivetrain and auxilliary parts on the donor car, dismantling the complete drivetrain and auxilliary parts on the 2l, installing everything in the 2l, changes to vehicle electrical system, recoding etc. plus time for sorting out the inevitable issues to get it running correctly you'll be looking at 100+ man hours as a lot of the work will require more than one mechanic working at the same time - 100 hours @ £65/hour +VAT comes in at just under £8k, add in the services of a car electrical specialist to sort the car wiring and electronics out and you're easily into the 8-10k range

Seems like you have lots of hands on experience with engine swapping. Have you ever taken an engine out of a car?
They won't need 100 hours. If they have a donor car, the mechanical swap (engine, transmission, driveline, brakes) will take about 3 days tops, maybe 1 of those days for 2 men. So that's £2,5k on labour, and 1 hour coding by a specialist for the ews. Maybe the change also the ews/gm5/locks and then that isn't necessary.
If you're used to pay 8-10k for that kind of work, you're being cheated.
Remember: it's just swapping out parts. Nothing has to be fabricated. A regular engine swap is only 1 day.
If you have a very good donorcar, you can maybe drop the complete front end (engine, suspension, transmission). Then you save a day on labour.

Unlinke installing a V8. Then it's fabrication all the way, and thàt takes time.

GL on your road to POWWWWAAAAA jonny :-)

if you'd like to come to my neck of the woods and have a look at my car and talk about things in general your more than welcome :-) id love to show you around it and give you some advise on where id do things differently.

I think its a good idea actually, 3.0 engine is absolutely sweet as HELL. Strap the TS ess unit to it and a characterful engines becomes a true gem imo. The sound they make teamed together is glorious. If it was me for the extra id spend my time trying to get the alpina Roadster S engine, think its a 3.4 unit, then TS2 for 400hp     Now that really would be special!

Fair enough Guido - I've never had to remove a whole engine myself, and never had a car that needed it, that's why I said 'let's play the estimate game' and then gave you the figures I'd used so that you could comment...

I still have a gut feeling that you'd have to have to allow additional time for trouble shooting and fine tuning, but even if the bill for the engine swap came in at 4k, it turns out that some of the other bits were underestimates anyway, e.g. JE has quoted the BBK as £3k installed rather than £2k, and looking through earlier posts where he's quoted figures, the £10-£12k already spent looks to be in the right ballpark, so the total still ends up around the £40k mark

...... I don't want to push your plans a year ahead, but what about this....

For that price alone you can sell the seats :yeah:
(although the bidding will go up I think)

now where the hell is Roachford.... :scratchhead:

I have to say I agree with Perry. if it were like for like then yes a couple of days would do it, but changing a 4 cylinder for a 6, plus the gearbox and drive train; there are just bound to be dozens and dozens of little differences that will need sorting out.

And I have taken a few engines out in my time. Even once tried swapping one 4 cylinder Ford for a different 4 cylinder Ford engine even that was a pita, which I gave up on, though to be fair I didn't try very hard.

I agree with this. It's good to see some refreshing new ideas from JE.

Swapping everything over is easier than just 1 engine for a different type of engine.
Obviously you have to have experience with bmw's (and the z4 in particular), I mean you'd have to know if things like the fuel pump etc are the same, that sort of knowledge you'd have to have (I know for a fact these are the same but there's much more obviously).
But with a donorcar you know you have every part.
That said, the better option imho is still to swap everything over to a nice 3.0i like I said before. I don't know what he has done exactly to his current car but it looks like that can still be done in 2 days, and a lot of it you could do by yourself or with a handy friend. That way he has 1 nice 2.0 to sell, and 1 nice 3.0 new, both with the right VIN etc.
Price difference between the 2.0 and 3.0 isn't that big. Some people want a 2.0i (for a daily or so) as it's obviously more fuel efficient if driven moderate.

JE has owned this car from new, well so had Trigger with his broom in only Fools & Horses
Here we go again....

The Car of Essex, also known as JE's paradox, is a philosophical conundrum that addresses the question of whether an object which has had all its component parts replaced remains fundamentally the same object. The paradox was most notably recorded in the late 1st century by Plutarch in the Life of Theseus. Plutarch raised the question of whether a ship which is restored by replacing all its wooden parts, remains the same ship.

Prior to Plutarch's writings, the paradox had originally been discussed by philosophers such as Heraclitus, Socrates and Plato and, more recently, by Hobbes, Locke and SRHutch. This conundrum is seen as giving insight into the individual philosophers mode of thought with some saying "it remains the same", and some saying, "it is no longer the same". There are several variants in common usage, 'Grandfather's Axe' is common in the USA, while in the UK 'Trigger's Broom' has recently been superceded and 'Jonny's Zed' has become ubiquitous.

My opinion JE its your car, your money, you do just as you please, your car looks pukka now so what ever you do can only help, I'm an old Essex boy myself and was always (and still) modding my cars, enjoy what you have and then enjoy the improvements

Guys TBH i wasnt gonna post on here again, yeah i get the hump with some of the comments but i guess if we were all like "Jonny essex" it would one mother f***ing crazy arse forum
Anyway i get the madness i really do and trust me im not rich, so i feel the money i spend and gone without holidays, new clothes, a PS4 and new Curved TV ( august tho lol ).
I love my car and it has KILLED me getting to the way it looks inside and out, you really do have to see the car in the flesh to see just how good it looks to understand this.......the power doesnt bother me but i would always feel that its a show car not a race car, i would like both so what ever I do it WILL have more power, and yes i wont do another thread until ive started on that as some of you get funny which i dont get really as my threads seem to entertain all of you so im pretty sure it would be a dull forum if some of the the more "colourful" characters left like me
I respect the comments that have been made good or bad, i wont name but some of you frustrate the hell out of me but its a free world just a shame a BMW V10 conversion isnt free.
BTW i have mild Dyslexia so it can be very offensive when you correct them, good thing i take them as a sign of a single minded person heay.

welcome back .. don't be to sensitive  rise above it

I for one am very inspired by your enthusiasm :winner: please keep us informed of your mods and opinions, you are a valued member of this forum ...
