Its time i shared my 2016 BHP plans

I have always wondered about these, I was going to say over modded cars, but to save arguments I will say highly modified cars.. As Perry has pointed out JE could have an investment at finish of over £40k in his car.. but if the car was written off or nicked what sort of payout would he get.. is there anyway to safeguard the investment made..??

You get an agreed value policy with the insurance company.

Generally a specialist policy for a highly modified car is no more expensive than for a standard car.

Yes, if you estimate it like that....
But the labour for engine swap wont be 8-10k, and I wonder if he has already spent 10-12k.
This is all highly speculative...
Garage labour charges in the UK are quite high - especially in this part of the country - and, as they charge by the hour, they don't exactly rush things unless you get a fixed quote for a job. An engine swap of this nature is unlikely to get a fixed-price deal as there are likely to be numerous issues to be dealt with during the work

I estimated that, with dismantling the complete drivetrain and auxilliary parts on the donor car, dismantling the complete drivetrain and auxilliary parts on the 2l, installing everything in the 2l, changes to vehicle electrical system, recoding etc. plus time for sorting out the inevitable issues to get it running correctly you'll be looking at 100+ man hours as a lot of the work will require more than one mechanic working at the same time - 100 hours @ £65/hour +VAT comes in at just under £8k, add in the services of a car electrical specialist to sort the car wiring and electronics out and you're easily into the 8-10k range

Why not just keep the 2.0l and mod that engine?!? That would be unique. Anyone can slap a S/C on the 3.0l z4 not that many turbo 2.0l z4s running high boost?!

At least then you keep your own engine.

The important thing about an agreed value policy is the word 'agreed'. You couldn't buy a brand new car for £20k and get an agreed value policy for £40k as the insurance company wouldn't agree that it's a true replacement value for the vehicle - they're constrained by the principal of 'betterment'.

In this case, they might agree a replacement value equivalent to a 3l Z4 plus the modifications but they wouldn't make any allowance for the fact that a lot of money has been spent putting the engine from a 3l Z4 into the shell of a 2l Z4 as, to replace the car, you could just start with a 3l Z4 and make the equivalent modifications.

I'm going to be a bit blunt Jonny but maybe stick to cosmetic mods, the car looks distinctive and well executed but this supposed pampered example had one oil change in the first 8 years of ownership because it didn't occur to you that it might need regular maintenance even with lowish miles :o

MM's idea about a turbo conversion is realistic. You keep your car without butchering it, save countless thousands and retain the one point the 2.0 has over the rest of the range being the lighter engine over the front wheels with improved turn in and crisper road manners. As MM says it would be quite a desirable package.

Or why not have the 2.0 and buy a high mileage M for hooning purposes.

I also believe that JE has clarified his cars service history, when he told us that it had only had 1 service he was mistaken.

I completely disagree with the idea but I say go for it... nobody on here is going to go hungry due to anyone else's proposals, so why does it always precipitate such debate? :)

got to respect someone standing firm...

Point taken on the servicing if correct but sort of highlights the need to be realistic about the engineering plans if you haven't got a real interest or grip in even basic maintenance. It would be very easy to reduce his lovely looking car to an expensive half finished pile of parts if the sourcing and execution of such an ambitious swap was not carried out with real expertise.

If it stops the endless repetition and comments of 'unique' then I vote yes!

just think the same people look for the 'debate' when there isn't really one to be had, if you assemble the implied and written facts.

the above putin post is a prime example, it may be a joke, but seeing as my comment was clearly set in the context of not doing anyone else any harm, it was rather moot. and i'll apologise in advance if I misinterpreted it.... :)

I think the guy from Essex just likes chatting about his car - he's not running for f*cking government...

If you post about something like this on a car forum, you're going to get debate - and off-topic posts - surely that's the whole point of a forum?

it's not so much others making a point, more their surprise that he'll carry on doing his own thing...!

I think Mr Essex got his real wish...He had everyone talking about him and his Z, whether it's good or bad I don't think he cares.

I'm now off to install a Rolls-Royce RB211 into my Z, one-upmanship and all that...

I have no idea about what is or isn't possible with the 2.0l engine.

However I think the suggestion to JE about retuning his existing engine (Turbo/supercharger) rebore racing cams, whatever is possible would be sound advise.
Giving him the uniqueness of having the fastest and best 2.0l Z4 in the UK. :driving:

Good luck JE with whatever you decide to do, but maybe put the thread up when your decision has been made.
A build thread would be good too.

what are you intending to do with the usurped powerplant?

will it be shipped to JE to bring about a happy end to this thread or should we be on the lookout for a 747 with a slight mismatch on one wing? :P
