To be honest, I don't think you read half the posts anyway - the majority of people are trying to help you but you seem to take anything that questions the viability of your 'plan' or 'idea', as a negative comment

I don't believe that anything I've said on this thread has been in any way, shape or form a 'negative' comment but it seems that you don't want discussion, you just want lots of posts that support your plan, no matter how foolish it looks from outside, and say 'Wow, Jonny that's amazing' when, in truth, the only amazing thing is how much money you seem to be thinking of flushing down the toilet by insisting that you've got to keep 'your Zed' even though, if you do thing the way you seem set on, there'll be the square root of bugger all left of the original car when you've finished

Your main argument always seems revolve around the fact that you've owned the car from new but, if you take the amount you've spent (and are planning to spend) on mods, you would probably be well on the way to owning a brand-new boxster (or similar) as a replacement

As I've said on several occasions, at the end of the day, It's your money and you spend it as you see fit but IMO people are trying to help you out by asking questions and pointing out the potential problems & issues you are likely to encounter by doing it 'your way'

Bingo! Also just seen the brake thread, lolz

Can't believe we're going round in the same circle. There is no shame in buying a second hand car. All my beems have been second hand and I made them mine.

Like above half the fun of life is new things and new experiences there's a point in life where you have to move on, your so emotionally attached it's nearly an ilness. Try something new, my recent experiences have changed my life and it feels like life's just beginning and selling my pride and joy made it happen, sounds like you need something similar to fill this hole you have.

It's just a car, and what ever you do to it... It will just be a modded 2.0l and as said you could have bought something so much better to drive and actually designed for the intended purpose instead. Modding is a mugs game.

I hate myself agreeing as I love Johnny's passion for his build. The money spent on a donor car + his current car + constantly monthly money spent could be spent on deposit and car payments for something brand new like this and be back to that owning a new car feeling (yes mods can be done too):

You don't seriously think the money that JE has to spend for this conversion will get him in a 2013 boxster S now do you :scratchhead:
He's talking about mods costing a few thousand pounds, not tens of thousands...
You're showing a car costing 40k used (or more).... How's that gonna compare... :headbang:

An engine conversion and then maybe a supercharger. The same one I have.
I'm not saying it's a sensible thing to do, but it doesn't compare in any way to a car costing 40k+

If I where him I'd buy a silver 3.0i in the same colour and swap all his mods onto that (so swap all the panels etc), and sell his old car, or maybe even a z4m and swap some mods (like the roof and maybe seats). It depends on how much power&performance he wants.

The z4 3.0i and even the z4m are so increadably cheap in the uk; a 3.0i can be had for 6k or so and a z4m for 12-15k. For that kind of money you dont go and invest in a 5k supercharger. It would be differnt if a z4m would cost 30k (lets say 5 years ago), then it made sense.

Even swapping over all the parts from a 3.0 to a 2.0 is a considereable cost, as I think he won't be doing it himself. If you can do stuff like that yourself (and if you want to swap drivetrains etc, you'd have to have 2 carlifts), you can save huge amounts on labour.

But swapping over the body panels, interior, roof is much more simple (so going from a 2.0i to 3.0i with most of his mods). You don't have any coding issues, you get the right 6speed transmission, right rear axle, right propshaft etc etc.

With buying a 3.0i wreck, he still might have some coding issues with the EWS, and a huge amount of work, so I think that's only good way to go if you have time, have the skills and have the workspace to work (carlift needed). I would do such a project (depending on the cost of the wreck), but I know that I wont have to pay a mechanic (as I have my own space/lift/tools).
And be sure that everything on the wreck that you need is still in working order (maybe rad, coolant reservoirs etc can differ between models). If you have to buy that stuff at the dealer, it will cost you serious money. A lot of parts are z4 specific, so 2nd hand parts is limited (unlike generic e46 parts).

But when buying a wreck, you may get some money back by selling parts individually, but that can be a hassle (taking pars of, storing them, putting them on ebay etc)

Shouldnt be a problem, he has said numerous times that spending vast amounts of money is not a problem.

I originally said the amount he's spent so far plus the amount he's planning to spend

Lets play the estimate game... remembering that JE's done/doing very little of the work himself
£10-12k Mods so far inc labour charges
£2k Big Brake Kit
£2.5k Other planned mods that have been mentioned e.g. M bonnet including respray / LSD
£5-6k Value of original car if no mods carried out
£7k Donor 3l Z4
£8-10k Labour and ancillary charges for engine swap
£1k Suspension re-work after engine transplant
£5k ESS supercharger & fitting/troubleshooting

So that's over that notional £40k without much effort and I bet there's stuff I've missed

Blowing £40k on a car you would be lucky to sell for £7k... Now that's the Johnny Essex way. Dude, buy the porsche

JE - Other forum members have given you their opinion as you asked for them so just because you don't agree with most of them you cant label them as negative as you invited the opinions.

TBH this is something you keep going over every so often so rather than keep mentioning it, if you feel that strongly that it's what you want to do, just go ahead and do it and stop seeking opinions as you know what the overall consensus is on your project.

The one thing I would say is are you capable of then maintaining what you are planning to create as your not just talking engines - your talking drivetrain, electronics and all the rest that is necessary to make it work? As it wont be a standard car there will be knocks, rattles, noises and other teething problems you wont understand and I say this with due respect but didn't you recently have to pay someone to fit a MFSW and Dice mediabride (if I remember correctly) which is something most members have had no issue installing and what I would class as on a scale of 1 to 10 on difficulty as a 4 at most?

I say this as most ppl who attempt a mod this big are mechanically minded so after the transplant are you then prepared to keep your wallet open for all the other inevitable problems you will no doubt have of which you wont have the knowledge to solve/fix?

I just think in your quest for more power you really haven't thought this through properly as you feel it's just a money thing and once the transplant is done, all your problems are solved.

If you still want to go ahead after all the opinions you have read - good luck to you mate

I have always wondered about these, I was going to say over modded cars, but to save arguments I will say highly modified cars.. As Perry has pointed out JE could have an investment at finish of over £40k in his car.. but if the car was written off or nicked what sort of payout would he get.. is there anyway to safeguard the investment made..??

Insurance is something else to think about.
I would imagine that it would cost less to insure a proper 3.0L than a 2.0L thats had all this work done.
And insurance would probably only pay out market value for a 2.0L.

Yes, if you estimate it like that.....
But the labour for engine swap wont be 8-10k, and I wonder if he has already spent 10-12k.
This is all highly speculative...
