It's time for the winter tyres I think...

The zed is usually pretty sure footed, I think with any decent 255 tyres and 231bhp you have to be pretty deliberately or in bad conditions if you want to get any form of oversteer.

But last night it was about 1 degrees and my tyres were still cold having just left work I had some unintentional but quite enjoyable side ways action, some would say it's wasn't ideal in Edinburgh city centre during rush hour but what can you do

The winter tyres will be going back on tomorrow, probably until March.

We had some snow last year and the z4 done well when it got the opportunity but I'm hoping for some more this year, I like the looks I get flying up snowy hills in a sports car when no one else can move even in their Chelsea tractors with summer rubber.

It's still dodgy though because whilst you're in control hardly anyone else is in the white stuff particularly if they try to drive up to a junction as fast as you not realising it will take them 3x longer to stop.

I haven't experienced heavy snow in the z4 but I think it will be fine unless the hill is really steep or the snow is deeper than 6 inches which is basically unheard of on uk main roads.

Winters tyres are all they're made out to be, night and day difference.

I rarely post but after 15 months of ownership I'm happy to report I've had zero faults in my 2004 3.0i.

I have no plans to change it any time soon and it will be tough to replace, the only cars in my budget that I would consider are the coupe, absolutely gorgeous, or the r32 golf, lovely noise

My winter alloys and tyres went on the other week, however, I find the winter tyres make the rear end a tad twitchy if you press the loud pedal too much, no issues with the dashboard warning lights though

I almost lost the backend coming out my work car park on Calton road on Friday night.

Shat it :)

Switched over to winter tyres in the week on my works Mercedes E250 and this is now an annual event since getting stuck out on the Mendip Hills several winters ago in an automatic rear wheel drive car that refused to move in the snow and I ended up being forced to abandon the car overnight.

I had decided against changing the summer tyres on my Z4 however considering last night's 1am run from Cardiff to Gloucester via the Forest of Dean in driving rain, strong winds and wet leaves (thanks to Storm Angus!) and with some serious arse twitching (mine and the Zed!) I might have to reconsider that decision ...

I would just add that winter tyres are for winter and work better in the cold/wet too , not just for dealing with the white stuff ;)

Agree. Winter tyres are designed for cold and wet as well as snow/ice. I've been using them for about 15 years now, and feel very uncomfortable taking out a car on summer tyres in bad conditions.

Make a big difference in the cold. Mine need to go on ASAP but they are currently in my fathers garage.

Maybe this weekend as this an hour away.

Glad to hear all the positive comments. This is my first winter with my first rear wheel drive car. I've invested in winter tyres and I'm hoping they will do me proud. My zed is my dd and my workplace is at the top of a cold hill where any snow often sits awhile. I've had to help push bmws off the car park there with just a light snow cover. As I am often last to leave, I can't risk being stranded. Viv

Have to agree OP - my winters will be going on my E46 daily soon (sadly they are only 16 inchers so won't fit my Z4, so it will only go out on good days)!

Just wondered why someone with your user name seems to be living in Edinburgh? :?

I just put 4 Michelin CrossClimates on my car; brilliant tyres! The video below explains how good they are in all weather.
