So it has been announced, opinions?

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/65578/new-bmw-z2-due-2016

Personally, I am looking to change to a 435i Msport in next 6 months and then either the next gen Z4 2 yrs after that. I wouldn't consider the Z2 as it won't offer the RWD and elements of practicality like my E89 does now.

I always take Auto Express announcements with a pinch of salt. Having said that if the Z2 does appear I would be very interested in 2.0l guise depending on bootsize, ie similar to my Z3s. Front wheel drive doesnt bother me too much, the fact it will be smaller and hopefully more nimble than the current Z4 is good enough.

The fabric roof could be a deal killer though :|

Interesting news.

Looks ugly to me and is a shame that they will be FWD.

That said a car of similar size to the Z3 could potentially be a much more stimulating drive than the E89, but only time will tell.

well its due in 2016, so they say, which means your Z will have just about covered 1,000 miles by then Tim :poke:

Oh, another BMW model... what a surprise. Far too many models now IMHO. If they bring out a Z2 then I'd be surprised if they kept the Z4, if they do, it will get bigger and more bloated akin to Merc SLK and SL IMHO.

I too had pinned my hopes on a 4 series, but after seeing it, I'm not going that route, it looks the same inside as your bog average 3 series, not for me.

It looks great and will have a niche, but I'm wondering how bmw are going to market the benefits of a FWD after years of telling us just how amazing RWD is. There will no doubt be some decent technical reason which I am missing.

Er guys, that picture is a mock up, no one actually knows what it looks like... well, perhaps the designer does.

I did have reservations too about the 4 interior but after spending some time in the 3 Msport I found it really suited me. Also comparing it to the S5 and C Coupe interiors and exteriors it still gets my vote.

I did like the Red stitching on black leather on the AMG Sport Plus kit and wondered if I could get that in the 4. You can but only on the Sport version so I will hang on a bit and wait for the Msport to get it. The dash however was boring and somewhat less luxurious.

The Audi's interior was nice but too black for my liking and to spec up like for like on an S5 was £9k over the 435i Msport, why?

I like the idea of a contrasting colour and running highlights (Estoril Blue) in the 4 interior and the dash does seem more modern than the other 2. I am waiting for the dealers to call me for a test drive at end of month. Don't get me wrong I love my Zed but with an impending job change it means I can get a company car, unfortunately a Z4 35is is not on the list but the 435i Msport is.

Umm... I dont recon this will be coming out in this form factor!

Simple. They'll just forget all that and tell you this is the best thing.

Ever wondered why the NEW Daz ultra gets whites whiter than white? err....didn't the last one do that? Or does that mean you lied on the last one?

So true!

Just look at bmw's gushing appraisal of RWD on their website! Will soon need an update if this is all true!

Then again the m purists were dead against turbos for so long but it hasn't harmed the 1M

The people buying these cars will be non the wiser. This car isnt for any of the above its a entry level model for normal people not anals :P

I disagree, A) Its a model in its own right and will possibly have its own model designations as with the E89 and B) If done properly, it is a BMW will be as good as anything in the range. Personally I'm looking forward to a smaller lighweight roadster and if BMW are wise a model available with a higher output for some decent performance.

Just because its front wheel drive doesn't mean it won't have its own following of petrolheads or (dieselheads :) )

Actually if it's about the same size as a Z3 then it's also about the same size as the E-85 Z4...

However...FWD...

300bhp 2l turbo, that will be a chipped 28i then if so get another +3mpg. If this popped 0-62 in sub 5 seconds would be very interesting.

2016 is when the z4 is due but its getting late for info and doubt both will be put out on the same year.

I cant see point of 2 lots of 2 seater cars.

To be honest I wonder if bmw giving up on the TT/boxter/merc/nissan Z market and aiming for mazda.

In terms of z4 numbers when I changed my 06 si sport with 08 si sport I thought it had the same vin number had to look close to find it was only 300 higher. Not saying only 300 were sold in 2 years as the vin may be specific range to the engine and colour but was very similar. never know the 08 may have been made 4 months after the 06 and sat waiting in the docs.

No charasmatic sounding 6 pot version then.
That's why i bought my Zed

That old chestnut. sound and smoothness vs speed and economy.

No they dont think people want slower fat 3.0 but 4 pot turbos which are faster and more economical during normal drives than the 3.0.

Reason why I dumped my 30i much sooner like 8 months than the other 3 zds before for the 28i. I can just about gulp at the depreciation loss but fuel was an additional loss I was not going to accept.

The sound is not all that big deal, after a few years you get over it but its the driving thats fun. Accelerating, slipping corners. Not the noise, scoobies and dump valves just sound so pants now.

I get more notice in my red 28i than the gray 30i, and not because its a turbo.
