I think fuel is the biggest outlay if your doing big miles on a weekly basis..
I would suggest that a Z4M isnt the thing to buy if your doing 12k+ a year and NEED to use it as your daily driver...
Its all about usage.....We have another car that we use daily too,it has the dog stuffed in it and anything else for that matter..
Im not rich,in fact im pretty poor in comparison to the average brit,and my missus only works 20 hrs a week,but with a bit of decent money management and general tighfistedness you can still run a pocket supercar!
I also refuse to have any kind of credit or borrow money....It can be a pain sometimes,but it was just how i was brought up.........lol....

fun cars can be an MX5, RX8, S2000, monaro, Caterhams, list is pretty big...even some of the Jap stuff like the integra (best FWD handling car I believe) would be hard work on a twisty road to keep up with.
in fact, I'm looking at a 500bhp monaro as a play thing, still way less than a M to buy, rear wheel drive and big V8 - just as much fun, if not more, and fits 4 with luggage... :evil:

for me, at this price-point - it was a Z4MC or a 335i (+JB4). I didn't need the practicality (if i ever do, ill swap to an M3), and i fancied a 'proper' sports car.
There are other options, but they either lack a bit of class, are more expensive to run, look a bit dull, are base models, are old, or are high mileage (monaros, S5/RS4, 911's, AMG SL's, CLS, M5's are all viable for decent Z4M budget). And that's why i bought an M

Jag....? S type R ? Great car for not a lot of money....But truly awful handling and they have are very very expensive to repair...Great cruiser.....sports car it aint...
Merc ?.....I cant think of one that ticks any boxes that the Z4M does..
Audi ? Much the same as Merc..... Maybe a TT.....Are any as quick or cheap as the Z4M ? Lets not get into the old dinosaur turbo stuff,not to be owned unless you insane/loaded/or never need to use it.
Maserati....3200 GT i presume ? Lovely thing,but to be used as a reliable daily driver?....NO... £10,000 engine rebuilds and bespoke handmade suspension that is now obsolete and can cost £3000 to renew is a serious deterent....

Integra.... I like,and have had many jap cars.... Great screaming engines,but lack any decent heritage/image... Try turning up to a nice restaurant in one and see if you dont feel an idiot..
Monaro..... Interesting choice,i do like them......The have got a great engine and an LSD,apart from that i cant see the attraction. Poorly built and very agricultural,lack any kind of finesse... Still the best from what you have listed,but not a lot cheaper than Z4M and they are older...

Trying to remain open minded and staying away from the "I don't like them" argument:
Lotus Elise/Exige. Lower power but will probably see off most of us on the twisties or a track. I believe these are pretty reliable and not stupid money to fix if something does go awry. Not really a comparison for daily drive-ability though. Maybe sits somewhere between a Caterham and a Zed in usability?
E46 M3. Arguably better handling when stock (not including mods on either cars suspension) and probably available for less money if you're strapped for cash. (CSL not included). Costs to run will be similar.
Going down the Boxter S/Cayman route has been over discussed before.

I'm with A340drivers sentiment, for the money the M is right at the top of the affordable foodchain and the Zed in any flavour is tough to beat.

Editted to say that i have no massive attraction to BMW myself although i have owned many... I have had Mercedes Cosworths,Audi's,Porsche,Skylines,Impreza's,Mitzy Evo,300ZX TT,Cosworth sierra's,Integrales.....To name a a few,but always seem to drift back to BMW for reliabilty,fun and residuals..

Vauxhall VX220 Turbo (0-60 4.7s) or VXR220 (0-60 4.2s) both same price point as the M quicker in a straight line and round corners. Not as refined as an ///M but faster for the same money.
The VX's don't have more power but their speed is undeniable great value for money.

That said I agree with Cueball there is more power available at the price point, but all with at least 1 compromise too many.
