It's my turn! Roof Problem!

Beautiful day yesterday. Washed and detailed the car for a top down adventure. Started the car and pressed top down button. Got nothing but blinking red light and "top not locked" warning. Great! And my laptop refuses to run ISTA anymore (definitely a Ediabas problem). So I bit the bullet and purchased ProTool. Quickly discovered the problem is with A68B, Microswitch roof shell 2 closed, left. Thought I would have to do some electrical work at the CTM module to trick the top into service position, but it wasn't necessary. I just reached behind the left C pillar trim panel and jiggled the wiring harness a little and the light went out. So now I can get it into service position to repair broken wire. But not today, it's rainy here today and lighting in my garage is not that great. So, I'll continue on the next sunny day.

Seems like there are only four types of E89 owners…. :tumbleweed:

Those that have had problems and either sold the car or solved it with various degrees of cost and effort…

Those that have yet to discover a problem and ignorance is bliss.. :tumbleweed:

Those that have a problem today and are now bricking it..

Those that anticipate a problem and brick it every time they try and close the roof.. :tumbleweed:

And there is one single Z4 owner in a little village in the far southeast behind the sea who continously recommends to renew the wires in the rear roof shell in advance. But nobody will understand him due to his strange foreign language.

Do you mean everything from CTM connector to sensors and switches? And with BMW wire set or homemade?

Do you ever feel like just giving up saying it?

I bought my car 10+ years ago after seeing a local car.
That guy still has that car, we pass some days.
I have never seen that car with roof down.
Often wonder if it's broke.
And if tail lights have moisture in them.

Nah - 1x e85, 2x 89s - never seen a sniff of a roof problem with any of them.

I did have a failed rear light once though (on an early e89).

It's not a problem free design for everyone, and may be likely to fail after xxx operations (or years) - but been ok for me :)

People come to a forum to moan & groan / seek assistance - not everyone has a roof issue.

Is there a diy somewhere for removing roof panel 2. I thought I seen one somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now.

Have a look at this one, maybe it'll help you:

Thank you. That's what I was looking for.
Btw, I got into my left side harness yesterday and could not find a wire problem. And the top is now working fine. I'm going to take resistence readings on the microswirch later today. I'll probably order both left and right switches and rewire the harness later this week.

These top microswitches never fail. Don't touch it, as you should remove the rear roof shell to mount it correctly (plastic welding, not screwing!).

Robbi,

How do you accomplish getting the new replacement wires past this flex point on roof shell 2. Do you run the new wires outside the harness and zip tie them.Screenshot_20230921-111808_Gallery.jpg

No, I always take the rear roof shell off to be able to see what I'm going to do. :D

And after my repair it looks like perfectly built in the factory.

How about roof shell one? Do you run new wires thru there? Or do you end it at the intersection of shell 1 and 2?
