It's Finally Happening!

After having owned my Z4 for almost 6 months it's finally being treated to a full detail, hopefully to bring the paint trim and leather back to life after years of poor cleaning which looks particularly bad on the Sapphire black paint. Here's the progress so far:

Wash and decontaminate:

But now they've just contacted me to tell me that they've hit a snag! the two wheels that were refurbed a few weeks ago they can't take off because the bodyshop overtightened the locking wheel nuts to the point where they just managed to break the lock nut key in one of the lock nuts! :( :headbang:

So now I am going to have to get that sorted before they can finish the two wheels and the arches and brake calipers on that side! :(

Well apart from that I am picking it up Friday so will post some more photos of the completed car (well apart from the two wheels on one side!) soon.

Looks great and like new now. It didn't look neglected in the before pics though.

How much did that cost ?

Mine could do with a detail. Where are they based and what do they charge?

Might be a bit of a trek for you since they are in Marbella, Spain (Top Car Detail). It's costing me 900€!

It didn't look too bad in photos but up close it looked like a 10 year old car, lots of swirls and fine scratches all over, I don't think the last owner was very keen on cleaning, the car was that bad when I got it that the controls in the interior like indicator stalks etc were caked in muck looked white rather then black and the seats looked black rather then red. I had the interior quickly valeted when I got it just so I could sit in it without the fear of catching some germs  But left the full detail until now. Costing me 900€

Don’t want to sound picky or sarcastic but whoever was applying that final ceramic coating while wearing a metal bracelet that looks like its coming into contact with the paint needs their head examining!

Why go to all that trouble and expense of detailing just to inadvertently scratch it up again??

I’m baffled!

I did notice that, but I guess if they do that then it'd be down to them to redo it! Anyway this company is highly reputed for detailing on the coast here so I am sure there won't be any problems.

Your calipers look new, make sure you collect it on a dry day, any rain or wet roads and we all know what happens to black!

Don't worry about the wheel nuts, I took my last Zed for 4 new tyres and all 4 lock nuts were seized & had to be removed after the first one broke the key!
They used a special socket from Snap On, the Snap On van actually showed up 5 min after they broke the locking nut key. The sockets hammer on, looks brutal and it takes for ever but they do job.
Make sure you grease the replacement locking bolts and also pop out the others and grease them. The bolts are a few mm longer than needed and protrude from the rear of the flange. They rust there and this causes this problem if you have long intervals between wheel removal.
Or just buy normal bolts, who has had wheels stolen recently, unheard of in reality.

Thanks for the info about the wheel lock nuts, that is a job for next week LOL. I had the calipers painted a little while ago, it's in another thread. I was due to the collect this afternoon but the weather here has turned so now postponed for tomorrow morning. This is my first black car but yes I know what you mean about keeping it clean! Luckily we have many dry sunny days here so mostly it just gets dusty and now that I have had it coated it should just mean once or twice a week trip to the jet wash a quick blast and dry and it should be done on most occasions.

After five longs day I finally collected my car and have the say the chaps have done a fantastic job the results are truly outstanding the car is totally transformed and now looks like a 2 or 3 year old car rather than 10. Here's some pics but they really don't do any justice:

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't have too many before pics so you can't really see the condition of the paint before it went in but it really did look like a 10 year old car, lots of swirls everywhere, paint marring buffer trails etc. looks particularly bad on sapphire black. I could see it was a rough diamond waiting to shine when I bought it and now it's finally been brought back to life!
