Hi guys, after deciding to go with another marque for a while im considering going back to a Z4. Just recently i have had a Range Rover 4.2 supercharged but i really diddnt think it felt special enough to justify the 11mpg i was averaging. So i traded that in and bought a Porsche Cayman s but i want something newer with some sort of manufacturers warranty. So my short list is down to three cars..2012 E89, probably a 20i s drive, a mini cooper s ROADSTER or a Mini Cooper S Coupe. I know it seems a strange comparison and this forum will probably be a bit biased...but what do you guys think? Any one here had experience of any combination of these cars?
Cheers in anvance

Welcome back Hunter

Have you driven a 2.0 e89 ? Not sure how the performance compares to a Cayman S :?

More importantly, how's the Z3 coming on... and most importantly, how's your son ?

Hiya Bing...well the Z3 was completed and sold....(looked awesome) and my Son...hes recovered (still a little slow with social skills and such) but hes back to chasing women and having a beer so all good in that way. Thanks for asking.
Im not wanting to tear around like a loony and get the tail out...im looking for something classy comfortable and able to cover the journey from Nottingham to Aberdeen without leaving me exhausted...but still must be a little fun at the weekends. It has to be a 12 plate or newer, look great and have roof off ability.....oh and £20k max

Personally never been a fan of the Mini's (albeit I'm in the minority on that) so I'd go for the 2.0 E89 which gives a nice balance of comfort and economy etc. but still some fun!

The E89 certainly matches your spec

The 2.0 is shite!!.......some say

My 2.0 serves extremely well as a very comfortable daly drive, and I can put up with the couple of times I wish it had a few more horses. Boot space is reasonable too, when the roof's up. My wife used to have a Mini Cooper and whilst it was fun to drive it was very uncomfortable on longer journeys. I felt there were lack of places to rest your arms, the zed is way more snug.

I had a mini cooper for a while - as stated above - quite uncomfortable on long journeys - I did look at the mini roadster a few weeks ago - it reminded me of the cooper with less practacality and I dont know if its just me but they feel cheap and plasticy inside - look good in a kind of cute/cool kind of way but I just remember how it was difficult living with the mini in a daily communte - now down the lanes the mini was fun!

The e89 just feels quality inside to me!

I did have a boxster as well - something like 2005 plate from new - I was considering another one when I got my z but the new ones are really nice inside but the old ones even just 2/3 years just dont feel quality sports car inside - again my opinion which others may disagree with. If I could have afforded a new boxster that would have been my choice - but I couldnt!!!

I have the 1.8 2.0 - I dont know if I would describe it as underpowered - its good for me although I would like a bit more noise. It shits well (although I am taking it careful as only have 1000 miles.

you need to drive one to see what you think - I always thought that my scirocco 1.4 tsi dsg 160 and BMW 520d felt faster than the boxster - on paper they were not. The z4 doesnt feel any quicker or slower than the scirocco but the scirocco was dsg and the z4 is manual

Hi Carol, awwww fanks. Iv had a few cars since being on here..SL 55 amg, Mitubishi L200, Range Rover Sport 4.2 super charged and the Cayman S. I suppose it says alot that im thinking of returning to the Z4 fold. But i do keep looking at the Mini roadster. A 12 plate E89 in my price range is only the 20i which im not getting great feed back about (sorry if that offends anyone) But for £17k i can get a 2013 plate Roadster Cooper S with as little as 4000k on it. The Cooper S roadster gets 5* reviews and the Z4 gets 4* reveiws but i love the looks of the E89 :(

Its like a choice of

Go and drive a 2.0 you can't make your mind up until you've driven one.
The look and feel will probably win you over. :)
(Hope your lad is ok?)

Check the offical BMW site - most of the nearly new are on there - also they will send you a video of the car focusing on any bits you want in case you dont want to travel to far at first

When you look at the mini vs the BMW - its no contest in my book!

The 0-60 times and top speed are near identical...but i think the Mini wins through the gears...but as i said...its not just about the speed...its about a combination of things, class, comfort, refinement, equipment and fun

The coupe and roadster are being dropped due to poor sales. The original is still the best, love my cooper S.

But they all might feel a tad on the slow side compared to the 3.0

Chester 2000

The Cayman S is a great car but very prone to a few very expensive problems....They are great to drive fast but quite noisey on the motorway, both with road noise and engine drone (it sits in the cabin just behind you and while after 5k revs sounds fab..but driving along at 2.5 k its not so amusing on a long drive). Porsche customer service is the best iv ever encountered...but you pay for it. They are quick...but not as fast as you may assume...i struggled to keep up with a 535d at one time. Feel well put together and well engineered, but not special. I always feel like it should have more umph...i drove a 2013 car...and that was what a Cayman should be.........but soooooooooo over priced.......
