In the US, large cities like Chicago require a city sticker be mounted for all residents, showing you paid your fee for owning the car. Every year you scrape it off, clean the glass, and mount a new one.
In the UK, they've got a more sensible solution. You get a plastic disc every year, so you mount a holder on the windshield and every year you swap out the disc.

The disc is actually paper, not plastic. We can pay the road tax online or at post office. Not sure about US, but cars with higher CO2 emission pay more tax in UK.

Interesting. We used to have inspection stickers on the cars here in Oklahoma, but they did away with it.
I like the UK solution though! I'd end up scratching my windshield every year!
